We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to work as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine within the King\'s College Hospital Princess Royal Hospital (PRUH) Specialist Palliative Care Service. This is a substantive post joining the team based at PRUH with a focus to enhance specialist palliative care in the emergency care pathway. The palliative care team offers an advisory service to patients with palliative care needs and promotes excellence in end of life care across the Trust. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual who will contribute to the development of this dynamic multi-professional team and build on partnerships across the locality. The post will sit within a collaborative network across our Clinical Academic Group within King\'s Health Partners. A wealth of opportunities exist to be involved in research via established links with the Cicely Saunders Institute. This post joins a 1 in 16 category B on call rota.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview.

Main duties of the job

  • The palliative care social worker is available to support the team for complex psychosocial issues. The consultant team aim to ensure cover is available at all times across both sites. An office with computer for the consultant is available along with a separate team office. Out of hours cover is provided by the joint consultant on call rota covering Guys, St Thomas\', Lewisham and King\'s.
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with their consultant colleagues to deliver excellence in palliative care and contribute to excellence in end of life care across the Trust. They will also work with colleagues based in the community, specifically in the borough of Bromley including St Christopher\'s Hospice, to enhance the coordination and delivery of care for patients and carers with the aim of developing a \'whole-systems\' approach in the Bromley area
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with their other consultant colleagues to develop new areas of support across the site. This role will focus on the development of palliative care services proactively in the emergency care pathway. Other areas of focus include development of palliative care service for frail
  • The on call commitment is for 1:16 rota, which is classed as a category B. On call telephone advice is provided to health professionals across King\'s, St Thomas\', Guys and Lewisham Hospitals and Guys and St Thomas\' community palliative care team

Job responsibilities

The Palliative Care team at Kings delivers an advisory service Trust-wide and has a flexible and responsive approach to meet the changing needs of the patients and carers. The team is split across the 2 main hospital sites Denmark Hill and The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, but work collaboratively both clinically and academically with our colleagues based at the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care. The Cicely Saunders Institute (CSI) opened in 2010 and is the first purpose built institute for palliative care in the world. The Institute was created by close working with the Cicely Saunders International charity, and with other philanthropic and statutory support. These purpose built facilities allow the closer integration of research and clinical staff to translate the results of research more quickly to patients and families. In 2016 the palliative care team were shortlisted in the BMJ palliative care team of the year awards and in 2022 the team have been shortlisted for the HSJ NHS Race Equality award.

In Nov 2017 Palliative Care was approved as the 22nd Clinical Academic Group within King\'s Health Partners in recognition of the continued integration of clinical and academic teams working together to improve the evidence base and clinical care for those with advanced disease including the provision of high quality end of life care. The Palliative Care Outcomes book was produced in May 2018 showcasing the excellent work to date. Ongoing priorities include improved integration with the Mind and Body programme, the continued embedding of outcome measures into practice, including the evidence base underpinning their use, benchmarking across all services, streamlining education and maximising opportunities for collaboration across the sector.

This post is based at the Princess Royal University Hospital and the post holder will work with their consultant colleagues, providing leadership for the team based at this site and leading in developing a proactive palliative care approach in the emergency care pathway

The consultant team work collaboratively with colleagues across all sites to deliver excellence in palliative care and contribute to the teams governance programme. They will also work with colleagues based in the community, specifically St Christophers Hospice, to enhance the coordination and delivery of care for patients and carers with the aim of developing a whole-systems approach in the Bromley area.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registerable medical qualification.
  • [MRCP] or equivalent.
  • Within six months of the expected date of CCT (or equivalent) on the day of interview.
Desirable
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
Registration
Essential
  • Full registration with GMC and Name on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment.
Training and Experience
Essential
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Palliative Care, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Specialist training in Palliative Care.
Administration
Essential
  • Experience in day to day organisation of Palliative Care services in a busy Teaching Hospital.
Desirable
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
Management and Leadership
Essential
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.
Desirable
  • Management course and/or qualification.
Audit and Quality Improvement
Essential
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change.
Teaching
Essential
  • Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research.

  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Palliative Care.
