Job Description

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for a permanent role at Parkview Clinic, treating children and adolescents up to 18. Parkview is part of a wider inpatient service, including 2 General Adolescent Units and a Specialist Eating Disorder Unit. The clinic was rated 'GOOD' overall in its latest CQC inspection, with all domains also rated 'GOOD'.



The post holder will provide senior psychiatric input and medical leadership within a multidisciplinary inpatient team, delivering psychiatric assessments, treatment, and medical risk management for inpatients and their families. They will support quality improvement and clinical governance alongside the medical lead and professional leads. Close collaboration with other consultant psychiatrists and medical staff at Parkview is expected.



The role includes specialist consultation, peer supervision of medical and non-medical colleagues, and junior doctor supervision. Strategically, the post holder will engage with Tier 4 and Mental Health Services leadership and management. There is also the potential to assume additional duties as Medical Director.



The clinical duties of the post holder will be to support the Tier 4 (T4) redesign and changing demands across the T4 services. The successful candidate together with the other T4 Consultants will provide a tertiary referral service for the assessment and treatment of adolescents suffering from psychiatric disorders that may as part of their management need treatment on an inpatient unit. The post holder will provide medical leadership and inpatient treatment for adolescents on inpatient unit working closely alongside the Medical Lead. The post holder will also work closely with West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative.



The successful candidate will be able to take a role together with the other Consultants in the planning and development of the T4 Inpatient Service provided by the Children's Hospital. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of safe policies and procedures alongside a staff group that is relatively new and to help to facilitate the development of a wide range of skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure the delivery of care on a multidisciplinary basis is of the highest standard.



The Mental Health Service has its own senior leadership team, which is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of Trust policy and Clinical Governance/Quality initiatives within mental health service. The leadership team at the Parkview clinic meets with the MHS SLT Team regularly to discuss strategic and trust wide operational matters.

Clinical and Professional Responsibilities



The Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist will play a key leadership and clinical role within the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of adolescents admitted to the inpatient unit, and will hold overall medical responsibility for patients under their care. Key responsibilities include:

Clinical Care and Leadership



Hold overall clinical/medical responsibility , reviewing patients in line with their clinical needs and risk profiles.



Provide direct psychiatric care, including comprehensive assessments , diagnosis , formulation of evidence-based treatment plans , and review of treatment effectiveness.



Provide psychiatric leadership and guidance to the multidisciplinary team, working in collaboration with the team leader and clinical colleagues.



Develop and implement treatment planning through outpatient contact or Care Programme Approach (CPA) that addresses the bio-psychosocial needs of each patient.



Serve as a psychiatric liaison with external agencies to ensure continuity of care, particularly in complex cases requiring multi-agency collaboration.



Involve families and carers in treatment planning, where appropriate and with patient consent.



Mental Health Act and Legal Responsibilities



Act as the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act.



Must be Section 12(2) approved and hold Approved Clinician status , with the ability to undertake assessments and apply the Mental Health Act as required.



Ensure safe and effective practice within governance frameworks, particularly relating to the Mental Health Act , Mental Capacity Act , patient choice and control , and risk management for patients, carers, staff, and the public.



On-Call Responsibilities



Participate in the Consultant on-call rota , including evenings and weekends, covering out-of-hours responsibilities.



Teaching, Supervision, and Development



Support, supervise, and appraise junior medical staff , including core and higher trainees, SAS doctors, and where applicable, Physician Associates.



Ensure compliance with Working Time Directive and New Deal arrangements for junior doctors.



Contribute to medical education, including participation in the Trust's internal CPD programme , academic lectures, and clinical seminars.



Attend and engage in the Trust's academic activities and professional development programmes .



Governance, Planning, and Management



Participate in annual job plan reviews to reflect service developments and modernisation.



Work closely with clinical and operational managers to support the efficient delivery of high-quality services.



Engage in service development and business planning for the Business Unit and broader Mental Health Services.



Participate in annual appraisal in accordance with the Trust's revalidation and performance frameworks.



Ensure accurate and timely recording of clinical activity and outcomes with administrative support, including submission to the Information Department.



Adhere to the Trust's policies, procedures, and financial instructions , and support the Mental Health Services senior management team in planning and service delivery.



Additional Responsibilities



Subject to availability of appropriate resources, there is scope for the post holder to develop a specialist clinical interest aligned with service priorities.



Flexibility is expected to support evolving service needs and strategic developments across the Trust.
