MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
The role of the Outreach Counsellor is to raise awareness and improve the health and well-being of individuals affected by cancer.
The Outreach Counsellor will be expected to work within legal requirements and specifications including Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety Legislation & CISS policies. The positive promotion of the CISS service will be important.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Communication
Ensure that links with community organisations are developed to promote the work of CISS
Communicate effectively to promote the exchange of information between groups
Communicate in a manner which will facilitate the success of the CISS service within the health sector.
To undertake public speaking confidently to various audiences when promoting the CISS service.
Communicate effectively and courteously within all CISS networks and support the Dignity at Work ethos.
Make links with community based groups and provide information for cancer awareness purposes.
Teamwork
Work effectively and efficiently within Outreach Team and the broader CISS teams, together with health sector teams you will work with.
Be supportive and encouraging of both staff & volunteers in the team respecting the views of other team members and helping to build co-operation.
Demonstrate a positive approach to teamwork by attending outreach meetings and contributing to staff meetings as appropriate.
Provide cover at short notice for CISS colleagues across other CISS support areas, when necessary, to cover the CISS Helpline during periods of sickness, holidays, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Liaison and Networking
Liaise appropriately with patients, their family, carers and friends
To maintain appropriate links with Hospital Consultants, Nurses, and other Health Professionals.
Undertake appropriate liaison to promote the services of CISS by providing a support/counselling service to people in hospital and those unable to visit the CISS centres.
Liaise regularly with the Charity Manager and the Lead Counsellor to maintain and further develop the professional status of CISS.
Service Delivery
Raise awareness and improve the health and social well-being of people affected by cancer by identifying the needs of the community and by linking with health professionals.
Raise awareness and improve the health and social well-being of people affected by cancer by providing support for the patient, family, carer and friends.
Engage in promoting positive relations between CISS, Health Professionals and the community at large.
Encourage and support the participation of service users and carer groups in the planning and monitoring of CISS services.
Decision Making Processes and Problem Solving
Provide suggestions or input to contribute and assist in the decision-making processes.
Refer to the Charity Manager and Lead Counsellor where appropriate.
Planning, Organising and Managing Resources
Effectively plan and prioritise own time in consultation with the Lead Counsellor and balance own workload to safely meet timeframes.
Efficiently use CISS resources and equipment.
Use of Initiative
Use personal initiative to resolve issues affecting the delivery of service or quality standards.
Use initiative to develop appropriate options to service delivery.
Demonstrate initiative in recommending, contributing to changes and improvements.
Data Analysis
Provide input to data analysis of service delivery in an appropriate and ethical manner.
Physical and Emotional Demands
Engage in supervision meetings as required.
Ensure physical safety by engaging in Outreach communication links.
Provide support for clients and colleagues who may be challenged socially, emotionally or physically.
Work Environment
Understand how the work environment could impact on your own work and engage in appropriate safety measures as determined by CISS policy and procedures.
Ensure that work practices are aligned with professional guidelines.
Take standard actions within health and safety guidelines and where applicable adapt to the environment.
Work within legal requirements and specifications to comply with Health and Safety legislation and to ensure that safe working practices are complied with and to ensure the safety of others.
Be aware of and take action to report any potential workplace/personnel hazards to the Charity Manager.
Work within CISS policies and procedures always ensuring that work- and work-related activities are operated in accordance with Equal Opportunities, dignity at Work principles and Data Protection legislation.
Demonstrate flexibility in the workplace to meet the requirements of specific deadlines and work schedules.
