Background
Campus Services (CS) employs over 900 staff with a turnover exceeding 65m in the last financial year. CS plays a key role in the quality of the student, staff and visitor experience, providing services across diverse areas such as the University's sporting facilities, food and beverage, cleaning, conferencing, hotel operations, day nurseries, Portering, post, branded and own-brand retail outlets, visitor services and attractions (e.g., Winterbourne House & Gardens), student housing, transport, waste disposal and recycling. CS is a highly commercial organisation operating within the University context and has an ambitious strategic agenda, in terms of growing our service profile across both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses.
Sport & Fitness is responsible for operating the extensive sport and recreation provision of the University of Birmingham. It caters for the whole sports continuum from elite athlete to beginner; it supports 6,500 members, 40+ performance clubs, over 50 sports scholars and offers an extensive participation and intra league programme. It stages big events for a number of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), national governing bodies and external groups, with spectator numbers reaching 3,000 for an individual event and has recently hosted the Commonwealth games for Hockey and Squash competition as well as swimming and athletics training venues. It services the many different user groups drawn from the University - societies, medical school, groups of friends and departments, and the city - athletic, swimming, football, rugby, hockey, and gymnastics clubs as well as many schools, local authority groups and the more commercial provider.
Role Summary
You will produce high-quality, engaging design concepts for UoB Sport marketing materials such as brochures proposals, posters, menus, banners, adverts, emails, websites, infographics and animations. You will also be responsible for capturing and producing compelling visual content through photography and videography. In order to flexibly use resource, you may be offered the opportunity to work across the department or wider University.
Main Duties

  • Participating in various design projects from concept to completion, you will ensure that brand guidelines are adhered to, whilst supporting the marketing team throughout the planning and execution of campaigns and projects.
  • Managing proposals from typesetting through to design, print and production.
  • Collaborating with the customers, understand and determine the design message.
  • Developing concepts, graphics and layouts for various projects designed to inspire, inform and captivate the target audience.
  • Creating drafts and producing engaging and attractive design solutions for review, using a variety of techniques.
  • Reviewing final layouts for errors, making improvements if required.
  • Lead on photography and videography for the department, specifically capturing content on members and facilities.
  • Supporting the Social Media and Communications Officer to create long-form video content, by capturing content but also creating this content by video-editing, to use across a range of channels.
  • Overseeing and maintaining the photo library.
  • Acting as the main point of contact for all printing jobs, ensuring proactive communication with the customer.
  • Keeping up to date in design developments, both print and online.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to receive and act on creative feedback.
  • Supporting equality and value diversity, including: (a) challenging bias prejudice and intolerance if appropriate or bringing it to the attention of a manager; (b) moderating own behaviour to avoid unfair discriminatory impact or bias on others.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy as may be evidenced by GCSE Maths and English grade C/4 minimum or equivalent level 2 qualification.
  • Educated to degree level is desirable.
  • Demonstrable graphic design skills, with a strong portfolio.
  • Experience of digital design for websites and emails is desirable.
  • Highly creative with a sharp sense of design, layout and conceptual thinking.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring work is completed to the highest standard.
  • Proficient in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Aftereffects, Dreamweaver, Premier Pro, Acrobat and Presentation (Adobe Creative Cloud).
  • Understanding of and demonstrable familiarity with digital best practice and UX/UI design is desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of HTML and CSS is desirable.
  • Ability to calculate and work within tight time scales and under pressure.
  • Hands-on experience with professional photography equipment, including lighting and camera's.
  • Keen interest in the latest design trends.
  • Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Understanding of what equality and diversity is and why it is important, with an ability to identify equality and diversity issues and either address these or bring them to the attention of a manager.
Dimensions
You will have no direct financial or staff management responsibility. The role is focused on the delivery of a quality service to customers.
Planning and Organising
You will be required to manage and prioritise a varied workload to deliver within required timeframes. There is also a strong need to maintain an awareness of activity across the team, department and wider University.
Problem Solving and decision making
You will work under the supervision of the Senior Designer, but will be expected to make decisions, prioritise work, solve issue and deliver the outputs required.
Internal and External relationships
You will be a member of the marketing team, and will be liaising internally and externally with copywriters, account executives, web developers, marketing specialists and printers.
