Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a 12 months fixed term Locum Consultant in Critical Care Medicine to join our forward-thinking and supportive team. This is a unique opportunity to work across two acute hospital sites-Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital-delivering high-quality care to critically ill patients in a region known for its clinical excellence and stunning natural beauty.

You'll be supported by experienced Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, junior doctors, and a robust governance structure. Main duties, tasks & skills required

As a Locum Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality care to critically ill patients across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital. Your clinical expertise will be central to managing complex cases in the Intensive Care Unit, where you'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate treatment.


Your responsibilities will include leading ward rounds, making key decisions in patient management, and providing consultant-level input into admissions, discharges, and ongoing care. You'll be actively involved in supervising junior medical staff and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, fostering a culture of learning and excellence. Teaching and mentoring will be a valued part of your role, with opportunities to contribute to training programs and educational initiatives within the Trust.


You'll also participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, service development, and quality improvement projects. If you have an interest in research or regional collaboration, there are opportunities to engage with the South West critical care transfer service, Retrieve, and contribute to broader system-wide initiatives.

Qualifications & Registration


Full GMC registration with a licence to practise


MBChB or equivalent medical degree


Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Intensive Care Medicine (or CESR equivalent)


On the UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview


Legal right to work and reside in the UK


Clinical Experience


Minimum 4 years of experience in Critical Care, including at least 2 years in general critical care


Competence in managing critically ill patients independently


Experience in stabilising and managing critically ill children for transfer


Skills & Competencies


Strong decision-making and prioritisation skills


Excellent communication with patients, families, and colleagues


Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team


Awareness of clinical risk management and governance


Education & Teaching


Experience in postgraduate and multidisciplinary teaching


Commitment to supporting junior staff and medical students


Audit & Research


Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement

Additional Qualifications


FFICM or equivalent fellowship


Joint CCT or CESR in a second specialty (e.g. Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine)


Relevant postgraduate diploma (e.g. FRCA, MRCP, MRCEM)


Higher qualification in medical education


Clinical Experience


Time spent working within the NHS


Experience managing critically ill children, including stabilisation for transfer


Familiarity with NHS clinical risk management systems


Teaching & Education


Instructor status for acute care or deteriorating patient courses


Completion of Educational Supervisor Training


Experience teaching across multidisciplinary teams


Research & Governance


Participation in clinical research, publications, or presentations


Experience in developing and implementing clinical guidelines


Committee involvement or leadership in audit/governance initiatives


Leadership & Management


Previous leadership or management roles within a clinical team
