Job Description

An exciting opportunity to join Blackpool Commercial Research Delivery Centre has arisen by a collaboration between Blackpool Teaching Hospitals / Booths Plc and CURE Leukaemia. As such we are pleased to advertise the Senior CURE Leukaemia Research Nurse. The Senior research nurse is the facilitator and collaborator within a team working on research studies in haematology with a primary focus on acute leukaemia. An established role within the department over the last 2 years, a dynamic role working with our partners to ensure our patients receive the most up to date clinical trials within Leukaemia.



1. The post holder will, with the Clinical Research Nurse Manager and senior research nurse colleagues, undertake the development of risk assessments, policies and standard operating procedures for the Research & Development division and Clinical Research Centre. 2. The post holder will oversee and take a leading role in ensuring clinical quality and safety adherence for research undertaken at the Trust. This will include but not be restricted to, internal monitoring of research studies, preparation for inspections, safety alerts and electronic medical records. 3. The post holder will support 7 day working across the department to support recruitment to clinical trials. 4. The post holder will assist the R&D team in both project and change management. 5. The post holder will support the R&D Management team in developing and maintaining the research nurse infrastructure to support, promote and organise patient recruitment to the clinical trials and research studies both on the NIHR portfolio and from commercial companies. 6. The post holder will identify and plan service requirements in consultation with relevant stakeholders and the R&D senior management team. 7. The post holder will ensure the availability of supplies to ensure the efficient and effective running of the service. 8. The post holder will control expenditure against budget constraints in consultation with the R&D senior management team. 9.

Research is central to the promotion, provision, and continuous improvement in the quality and safety of all aspects of the services we offer to our local population. We are a highly research active Trust with over 100 studies running at any one time. We now have a large research workforce made up of medical, nursing, pharmacy and administration staff. In line with national developments for research we have exciting and ambitious plans for the future. This post is fund by Booths Plc and CURE Leukaemia initially for a fixed 3 year contract. A pioneering role working across the organisation working collaboratively with colleagues at Booths Plc and CURE Leukaemia.



Professional/Clinical



1. To have specialist knowledge of clinical research, underpinned by degree level and ICH Good Clinical Practice Qualifications.



2. To work within professional Guidelines relating to Code of Conduct, Confidentiality, Accountability and Scope of Professional Practice.

3. To support the research nurse team with training, advice and monitoring, utilising their experience and knowledge.

4. To work as an autonomous practitioner having a flexible approach to workload schedules whilst actively recruiting, monitoring and following up participants recruited into research studies.

5. To facilitate effective communication:

written, verbal and electronic.

6 To act as the patient's advocate



7. To liaise with the multidisciplinary team as appropriate in the delivery of support and care to the patients

8. To co- ordinate the planning, implementation and development of protocols in accordance with research parameters as set out by the Chief and Principal Investigators.

9. To have strong interpersonal communication skills, having the ability to communicate with empathy in potential sensitive, controversial situations with patients who have given written consent to participate in the trial to become research subjects.

10. Actively seeks to promote health by providing evidence based information in a sensitive, empathetic manner.

11. To have a personal duty of care in relation to the care and working knowledge of the equipment required for the research study.

12. To maintain accurate records in line with professional guidelines and local policy using paper based and electronic systems.

13. Ensure that monitoring and investigations required for the study are carried out within the time schedules documented and be able to work to tight deadlines with restricted time constraints. This may involve taking blood samples, swabs, giving injections and other clinical procedures.

14. Be able to propose and implement changes within clinical areas across the trust and represent the research team or service.

15. To interpret medical records in order to judge whether a patient is suitable for a particular study.

16. To provide evidence of recent interest/experience in research and Continuing Practice Development.

17. Attend regular Research and Development meetings and Research Network meetings as required.

18. To participate fully in Divisional, Directorate and Specialty meetings, teaching programmes etc.



Educational



1. Be able to prepare, plan and deliver presentations enabling active development and dissemination of own knowledge base.

2. To share knowledge with multidisciplinary teams in primary, secondary, tertiary care and voluntary sectors.

3. To participate and be aware of current trends and developments within research and clinical practice.

4. To participate in research initiatives



5. To maintain a Continuing Practice Development Plan and provide evidence of the same.



Research and Development is a specialist field which involves understanding and being able to explain complex ideas and methodologies to staff embarking on research studies. It also includes explaining policies, procedures and approval mechanisms in order for research to begin. The post holder will be required to explain and discuss these topics both on a one-to- one basis and in groups.

The nature of the work is unpredictable, and the post holder will be expected to be flexible and responsive in order to deal with various aspects of the job at short notice.
