Role Overview
As Accessibility Manager, you will lead CalMac's commitment to accessibility and inclusion across every customer touchpoint, onboard, online, and in our ports. This is a pivotal role ensuring compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and CHFS3 contractual obligations, while driving improvements that make journeys seamless, equitable, and confidence-inspiring for all customers.
You'll be the organisation's subject matter expert, shaping strategy, influencing design, and championing inclusive practices that transform the travel experience for customers with disabilities and other access needs.
What You'll Do
Strategic Leadership
Own and deliver CalMac's Accessibility Strategy, aligning with CHFS3 priorities and Transport Scotland policy.
Embed Equality Impact Assessments (EqIA) across the organisation.
Establish governance and reporting to track performance and demonstrate continuous improvement.
Inclusive Design & Project Support
Advise on accessibility for vessel and port projects, including new builds and refurbishments.
Review design briefs and specifications to ensure compliance with inclusive design principles.
Collaborate with experts (RNIB, MACS, PAMIS) to validate design decisions.
Drive improvements such as Changing Places facilities, low sensory spaces, and enhanced wayfinding.
Customer Experience & Operational Support
Partner with Operations and Customer Experience teams to close accessibility gaps across the passenger journey.
Shape accessible processes, assistance procedures, and pre-travel information.
Digital Accessibility
Ensure digital channels meet WCAG 2.1/2.2 standards.
Lead innovative projects like digital wayfinding pilots and explore assistive technologies.
Stakeholder Engagement
Chair the Accessibility Advisory Board, ensuring lived experience informs decisions.
Build strong relationships with disability organisations and represent CalMac at sector forums.
Training & Culture
Deliver accessibility and disability awareness training in partnership with Learning & Development.
Promote inclusive practices and support cultural change across the organisation.
Monitoring & Reporting
Analyse feedback, complaints, and audit results to identify trends and improvements.
Report progress to the Executive Team and Transport Scotland.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
Significant experience in accessibility, inclusion, customer experience, or transport service design.
Strong knowledge of accessibility legislation and standards (Equality Act 2010, WCAG, MCA Passenger Rights).
Ability to influence at all levels and work collaboratively.
Experience engaging with disability organisations or user groups.
Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond to operational needs.
Willingness to travel across the network.
Desirable:
Knowledge of ferry operations or transport environments.
Experience with infrastructure or vessel projects.
Understanding of human-centred or inclusive design.
Experience developing or delivering training.
