Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and motivated client facing Data Centre Engineer to join our dynamic team at our Farnborough site.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting our clients day-to-day as a key member of the data centre operations team, managing tickets via our helpdesk system, monitoring and helping to maintain our data centres' security, performance, infrastructure and operational effectiveness, working with key technical and mechanical suppliers, escalating issues to ensure high availability and installing racks, servers and telecommunications infrastructure to meet client requirements.
This role requires an good all-round understanding of IT and technical infrastructure, networking, structured cabling and general technology trends. An interest in data centre technologies such as UPS, generators, power systems and cooling technologies is advantageous.
Duties include - but are not limited to:
Day to day assistance with the management of the data centre environment in line with good practice and company policy.
Monitoring and managing our data centre BMS systems (on site and remotely) and responding to alerts and incidents in a timely manner.
Monitoring and proactively managing requests for change and incident/issue tickets within the engineering service desk call queue, along with telephone and email requests.
Installing server racking, equipment and structured cabling, as required, to support client deployment and ongoing operations.
Implementing solutions for new clients and providing a high quality, responsive, technical remote hands service to live clients in response to inbound requests (and in line with contractual SLAs).
Installing cross connect cables and understanding client-defined patching plans.
Collecting deliveries, unloading pallets, transporting items for clients, maintaining client delivery inventory lists, and performing general data centre logistics tasks
Any related ad hoc data centre tasks
The Applicant
This role is client-facing, so applicants should be personable, positive, friendly and highly organised. Applicants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be comfortable communicating with a varied client base both face to face and virtually.
Internal progression within the company is encouraged throughout the organisation, so an ambitious person with the following skills will be well suited to the role;
Experience in working within a data centre environment with an understanding of the systems and infrastructure generally found within it.
Experience of working with helpdesk systems and client ticket management.
Strong understanding of data centre/server cabling and an in-depth knowledge of hardware concepts and physical component installations.
Well-motivated, tenacious and very keen to learn and develop.
Demonstrable experience in delivering high-quality client-centric service.
Proficient IT skills and proficiency in MS Suite, particularly Word ,Excel and Sharepoint.
A positive attitude, with the ability to contribute to a constructive and enjoyable team culture and workplace.
Advantageous Skills
Good understanding of data centre operations practices.
Experience of structured cabling planning & deployment
Experience of working with data centre technical administration, such as BMS systems and toolsets.
A good understanding of server technologies and applications.
A good understanding of networking, switching and routing.
Proven knowledge of electrical power and IT cabling systems/standards.
Exposure to data centre cooling and power SLAs.
Additional requirements
The successful applicant will be required to go through our high-level security vetting process prior to any employment agreement.
Applicants should live within 30 minutes of FRN1 and must be available to participate in a one in three weekly on-call Rota.
This role is 100% site based.
