DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION





The data team is a new team for Channel 4, it brings together teams from technology & insight into one dedicated capability. The team comprises of c40, a mix of directly employed by Channel 4 and then leveraging a partner for engineering resource. The team sits adjacent to the technology team and services the data needs for internal customers, including product, advertising, insight, finance, 4 studio & distribution.



JOB PURPOSE





Channel 4 is demanding a step change in its data capability.



The Data Director is responsible for delivering value from the broad range of data captured from viewers, along with new data sources that can be mixed with existing data to power data products and services.



Given this is a new role, the data director will be able to design & execute the data operating model, from a blank sheet of paper. The director will be responsible for agreeing the strategy with key stakeholders, building the foundations and delivering quick wins.



The data director must be able to Innovate with Purpose. They must be able to explore new ways to improve delivery, automate workflows, and evolve how we work -- bringing fresh thinking and future-ready solutions to the table.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Leadership of C4 data strategy, including developing an executable roadmap that both serves near term business need and sets foundations for the future. Act as a translator - taking the requirements from the broader organisation and identify what people, process and technology actions are needed to be taken to realise them. Applies advanced analytical judgment to prioritise data initiatives, balancing short-term delivery with long-term strategic value. Establishes frameworks to evaluate and prioritise use cases, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and measurable outcomes, rather than isolated point solutions. Introduce data governance best practice to Channel 4, in a manner which is appropriate for a creative media organisation. Build & develop the required capabilities of a successful data ecosystem - engineering, science, visualisation. Develop data literacy across the Channel 4 organisation - upskilling your own team & driving adoption in the wider organisation of new techniques & tools. Lead & Mentor - support and coach team members, sharing knowledge & acting as a role model. Be clear on expectations to ensure the data team is a high performing team.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE


Experience of designing & executing operating models resulting in greater efficiency & effectiveness of the data organisation. A commercially astute leader, who understands how to deploy data products to benefit the wider organisation. Has experience of how data delivers value in a D2C environment & is able to galvanise support from the wider organisation. Able to operate credibly at Exec level to influence and garner support for the data strategy & plan. Brilliant at execution, runs a tight delivery plan and gets stuff done at pace. A broad data leader with experience of specific data disciplines eg. Engineering or science. A leader that listens, collaborates and brings the whole team on the journey, setting clear direction and clearing the fog Able to work across a matrix and with a reporting line to CFO & Tech director. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain mini business plans for key data initiatives, whilst ensuring financial viability and strategic alignment Experienced in establishing financial KPIs and tracking ROI across data solutions. Can work across silo's & is used to bringing cross functional teams together.
