Alloyed is a young venture-funded company of about 150 world-class metallurgists, engineers, and software developers working across 4 sites in the UK, 1 in Japan, and 1 in Seattle to build the future of advanced metal components. To do this it uses proprietary software packages which combine advanced machine learning and physical modelling to invent better alloys, devise better ways to process them, and design better 3D-printed components.
The Role
Alloyed is currently designing microturbine engine for a range of jet propulsion applications. The system architecture is simple, with outer diameters ranging between 60-240mm considered. The objective of Alloyed's development programme is to use additive manufacturing to increase performance compared to current state-of-the-art by leveraging more complex designs enabled by additive manufacture and bespoke high temperature materials, including nickel superalloys. In parallel, the target is to consolidate the number of parts in the engine, reduce production cost and enable high production rate.
Alloyed is seeking a motivated Data Engineer to support the design, build and maintenance of the systems and architecture that enable the data collection, test control, and analysis of microturbine performance across different thrust ranges. This role involves close collaboration with design and experimental teams to validate the performance of new designs and control systems. You will report to the Testing Lead and play a key role in optimising jet engines, guiding future developments and in understanding and optimising performance of jet engines.
You will be based at Alloyed's manufacturing site in Abingdon. A highly competitive remuneration package is offered, including equity incentives.
Responsibilities
Support for experimental data collection, including the ownership of data logging frameworks to capture jet engine performance, calculation of key metrics and dashboards for test control
Contribute to rapid prototyping of the data acquisition platforms, including the design and deployment versatile sandbox environments to support with quick prototyping and fast iteration
Build and optimise data architectures to process and analyse experimental data
Automate and streamline data acquisition and platform agnostic post-processing workflows towards enabling self-service data access across teams
Create maintain and support code repositories, executing and adhering to clean code practices and strict version control
Collaborate with testing engineers to ensure experiments are feasible from a data collection and infrastructure standpoint
Enforce data security, privacy, and compliance including the implementation and maintenance of data governance
Essential
Degree in Computer Science, Data or other engineering and STEM disciplines (or equivalent)
2-3 years of industry experience in data analysis for system performance evaluation (or equivalent)
Proficient in data acquisition software system design and implementation (e.g. LabView)
Experienced in collaborating coding and programming languages (e.g. C and Python preferred and git)
Strong understanding of design and implementation of data acquisition systems principles
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
Highly detail-oriented, organised, and able to manage design tasks independently
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams
Desirable
Strong understanding of design and implementation of data acquisition systems principles, for high temperature and speed systems
Experience with hardware and sensor specification selection
Experience in UX design for data and control systems visualisation
Experience in embedded electronic
Understanding of basic electronics and wiring with a view to test system assembly
Experience in testing and performance evaluation of complex systems
Interest or experience in high-performance components, such as in aerospace, consumer electronics, or precision devices
