Our team

The Data and Analytics team are part of the wider IT Delivery and Operations team primarily based in Birmingham.

Our purpose is to enable the business and our clients to make informed decisions based on trusted insight.

Role and key responsibilities

Part of the Data and Analytics team, the role of Data Engineer is fundamental in the delivery of a best-practice business intelligence infrastructure that will contribute to the delivery of high quality data analytics in line with business priorities. They will be focused on architecting, building, managing and optimising data pipelines/models and then moving these pipelines/models effectively into production for key data and analytics consumers (including but not limited to MI Analysts and Data Scientists). They will be required to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to identify the optimal ways in which requirements can be achieved.

  • The Data Engineer will support the delivery of our data projects in line with the firm-wide strategy.
  • Promotes best practices and ideas on effective data sharing and consumption. Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.
  • Responsible for architecting, creating, testing, maintaining and optimising data pipelines and data models.
  • Ensure that the data users and consumers use the data provisioned to them responsibly through data governance and compliance initiatives.
  • Work with modern data and analytics tools to automate repeatable and error-prone data integration and data preparation flows.
  • Takes a proactive role in upskilling counterparts in data pipelining and preparation techniques to make it easier for them to integrate and consume the data they need for their own use cases.
  • Maintaining a up to date data dictionary and other appropriate metadata management tools to enable the business to understand their data assets and drive for single source of the truth.
  • Manages a high, and sometimes complex, workload day to day with the ability to prioritise work and achieve time sensitive deadlines whilst keeping a focus on the long term wider strategic goals of the team.
  • Excellent collaboration skills in order to work with varied stakeholders in the organisation.
  • Building close relationships with data scientists and management information analysts in refining their data requirements for various data and analytics initiatives and their consumption requirements.
  • Deploys Agile delivery methodologies as well as IT best practice to provide an excellent and efficient service to all stakeholders
  • Assists with any upgrades, integrations or configurations of existing reporting solutions ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are communicated with in advance to minimise disruption and maximise usage.
  • Collaborates with practice group legal technology teams, legal project managers and the IT team to share best practice, experiences, opportunities and threats as well as to develop solutions that work firm-wide across all practice groups.
  • Collaborates with the cyber security team to ensure best practice, especially when sharing technology solutions with clients.
  • Collaborates with the Risk and IT teams to ensure that relevant IT and Risk policies are adhered to and that any legal technology matters are compliant with data integrity, security, quality and procurement policies.
  • Acts as a point of escalation to support any issues identified that cannot be resolved by the Support Teams and responds to them within a timely fashion, managing communications to those impacted accordingly.
Skills and experience

We are looking for:

  • Has a strong technical ability and proficiency with the ability to translate this in to an understandable manner for a variety of audiences to understand.

  • Innovative and solution oriented with a positive outlook.
  • Pragmatic, robust and resourceful, with the ability to adapt quickly to different situations and personalities.
  • Follows and adheres to compliance with best practice and firmwide policies.
Experience:
  • Hands on experience in data management principles including data integration, modeling, optimisation and data quality.
  • Strong experience with various data management architectures like Data Warehouse, Data lake, Data Mart and the supporting processes like Data Integration, Governance and Metadata Management.
  • Strong ability to design, build and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata and workload management.
  • Understanding of modern data preparation tools (incl. SSAS / SSIS).
  • Knowledge of various development and deployment environments on premises, in the cloud and across multicloud environments.
  • Advanced experience with popular database programming languages - SQL, etc.
  • Strong experience in building and optimising data pipelines with large and diverse data sets, pipeline architectures and integrating datasets (ETL/ELT).
  • Good knowledge of working with popular data discovery, analytics and BI Software tools (such as PowerBI / SSRS)
  • Experience in working with data governance and data security teams in moving data pipelines into production with appropriate data quality, governance and security standards and certification.
  • Good knowledge of end-to-end Azure Data Factory
