Engineering at Specter

At Specter, data is at the heart of everything we do. Our data team--the biggest in the company--works side-by-side with product to power the tech side of the business.


We own Specter's data end-to-end: from collecting it, to matching and cleaning it, to delivering it efficiently via our product and API. Somewhere along the way, we also sprinkle in some AI magic. With 30+ data sources and a whole lot of data flying around, there's never a dull moment.


We're proud to move fast. Check out our release notes to see what's new on the product side--but there's just as much happening behind the scenes, introducing ClickHouse or moving from pandas to polars.


AI has unlocked a ton of exciting opportunities. We've built some of the highest quality data in the industry, and that gives us an incredible springboard to take advantage of all the possibilities today, as we've already been doing with our recent AI Search and Similar Companies, and a lot more to come.

Who you'll be working with

Here are a few of us:

Alexander

is our technical head of data. With 20+ years of experience, he leads the early stages of our pipeline--owning everything from data ingestion to platform architecture--and sets the technical direction for the whole data stack.

Henry

owns the intersection of data and product. He focuses on making our data fast, accessible, and usable--especially in how it flows through our product databases and APIs.

Jan

leads product management for the data team. He's behind most of our AI features and brings experience as a serial founder in data and trading.

Who you are

We're looking for someone who gets really excited about data-- and someone who takes ownership and cares deeply about the real-world impact of what they build.


Further you have:


Strong experience with Python and SQL


Good level of familiarity with Postgres (a plus: Clickhouse / DuckDB)


Data engineering experience


Excited by moving fast and building products end-to-end

A big plus:

If you have some JS / Typescript knowledge (ideally React) so that you can work closely with our product

A plus:

Experience with infrastructure architecture and DevOps

Our Hiring Process

Initial chat to discuss the role, learn about each other and explore whether it's a good fit


One-hour coding exercise - a domain-specific exercise that doesn't require any preparation. No white-boarding!


One-hour general technical interview [+ exercise review]


Final interview - a chance to have a general discussion, meet the rest of the team and make sure we're the perfect fit for each other. You'll have learnt more about us by this stage, and this is a chance to have any remaining questions answered!
