Overall purpose of the role





The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, building and maintaining the pipelines, integrations and infrastructure that power Blues data and analytics platforms. This role ensures that data from multiple sources loan origination, servicing, risk, finance, customer interactions and external data providers is ingested, transformed and made available in a secure, scalable and compliant manner. The Data Engineer will work closely with BI developers, analysts, and data scientists to provide reliable, trusted data for decision-making, regulatory reporting, and advanced analytics, supporting Blues ambition to become an AI-driven, data-first organisation.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities





Data Pipelines & Integration

Design, build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for ingesting data from core systems, SaaS applications, APIs and external data providers. Ensure pipelines are efficient, resilient, well-documented and cost-optimised. Support real-time and batch integrations for operational and analytical use cases.


Data Platform Engineering

Develop and maintain Blues modern cloud-based data platform (Azure Synapse/Fabric, Data Lake, Databricks, or similar). Optimise storage, partitioning and compute for performance and cost efficiency. Manage environments (dev, test, prod) and CI/CD pipelines for data workflows.


Data Quality & Governance

Implement monitoring, logging and alerting for pipelines and data flows. Build data validation, cleansing and reconciliation checks into ingestion processes. Support metadata management, lineage and cataloguing (e.g. Microsoft Purview). Ensure compliance with GDPR, FCA, and internal governance policies.


Collaboration & Support

Work with BI Developers to supply curated datasets for Power BI and SSRS reporting. Partner with Risk and Data Science teams to enable ML/AI workloads. Support Finance and Compliance with auditable, accurate data pipelines for regulatory reporting. Participate in design reviews, architecture discussions and continuous improvement initiatives.

Compliance and Regulation



Develop and maintain a full understanding of the Companys compliance requirements (including the Financial Conduct Authoritys Conduct Rules) and act in accordance with the standards, instructions in, and the spirit of those requirements. Take responsibility for ensuring that personal data within your remit is handled lawfully, fairly, and in line with the companys data protection policies and procedures. Collaborate with the Data Protection Officer to ensure compliance with data protection standards, guidelines, and principles, acting in a manner that upholds these requirements while supporting the DPOs overall oversight responsibilities. For customer data, ensure it is processed securely and in accordance with data privacy obligations to protect the rights of individuals. For employee personal data, handle it with strict confidentiality and in compliance with employment and data protection legislation. Act to deliver good outcomes for our customers and understand how this requirement specifically applies to your role at Blue.

Skills and Experience




Essential

Strong SQL skills (T-SQL, stored procedures, performance tuning). Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT development (Azure Data Factory, SSIS, dbt or similar). Knowledge of data modelling (star/snowflake schemas, relational and dimensional modelling). Experience working with Azure data services (Data Lake, Synapse, SQL DB, Functions, Logic Apps). Solid understanding of data security, access control, and governance in a regulated environment. Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python or PySpark.


Desirable

Exposure to Synapse/Fabric, Data Lake or other big data/lakehouse platforms. Experience with APIs and event streaming (Event Hubs, Service Bus). Familiarity with DevOps / CI-CD for data (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions). Experience in financial services, lending, or other FCA-regulated industries. Knowledge of tools like Microsoft Purview for governance.
