Our Risk and Best Practice department in Bristol are currently recruiting for a Data Protection Manager to join their busy team.
The role requires someone who can work independently and take day-to-day ownership of data protection compliance within the firm. You should be confident to take on most tasks yourself, with occasional support and guidance from senior team members.
The role
Key responsibilities include:
Carrying out data protection impact assessments and reviewing how data is used across the business
Risk-assessing and responding to data breaches, including containment, mitigation and making external notifications where necessary
Leading on the response to subject access requests (and other data subject rights requests) with support from Risk & Best Practice lawyers (and external Counsel) where needed
Managing the firm's record of processing and overseeing data tracking, ensuring information is stored, processed, and managed in line with the firm's data protection policies and procedures
Drafting responses to data protection questions contained in tenders and client questionnaires
Responding to data protection queries from internal stakeholders across a range of areas, including HR, marketing, transformation (with a focus on AI) and information security
Advising, with support from Risk & Best lawyers where needed, in relation to international data transfers, data protection provisions in client and supplier contracts and FOIA requests
Supporting senior management on data protection, as well as other stakeholders including on change projects where data protection considerations arise.
Horizon scanning and helping to ensure the firm's ongoing compliance with data protection legislation and regulatory requirements.
Identifying opportunities to introduce new or enhanced software solutions to mitigate the firm's data protection risks and strengthen/streamline associated procedures
Leading on maintaining and updating the firm's suite of data protection policies and procedures, including the firm's Privacy Policy, ensuring that these reflect our legal and regulatory obligations
Leading on maintaining, updating and delivering the firm's data protection training programme
Assisting with and participating in internal and external audits relating to the firm's data protection compliance
Participating in the annual review of the firm's Enterprise Risk Register as regards the firm's data protection risks
Assisting the wider Risk & Best Practice team in managing data protection risks and associated legal and regulatory obligations.
What we are looking for from you
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
Experience of data protection, ideally within a professional services environment
Good understanding of data protection legislation and data governance
Industry certifications are highly desirable
Ability to work in a careful, methodological way with excellent attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
The ability to understand and apply requirements and standards and to carry out risk assessments based on these
Ability to take ownership of tasks and projects and manage own workload to meet deadlines
Ability to deliver work of a high quality, whilst ensuring that time allocated to particular tasks is proportionate
Proactive, self-motivated and flexible approach
