Job Description


The Special Care and Community Dental Service (CDS) in Allerdale and Copeland is seeking to recruit a compassionate and motivated individual to come and join our existing team of highly skilled clinicians and support staff providing dental care to our patients.

We are looking for a clinician who makes patient care their first priority and who thrives working with a number of different patient groups. Being able to communicate effectively with both patients and staff is essential as you will be responsible for looking after some of the most vulnerable people in society.

You will be supported to develop skills to deliver the main duty of the post in providing emergency dental care for adult and child patients. You will enjoy the professional support of highly qualified and experienced colleagues, working within well-equipped modern dental clinics and other healthcare facilities.

Main duties of the job

The main role of the Dental Officer is to provide emergency and urgent care identified through the Dental Direct triage process.

In certain circumstances there will be an expectation to:

  • undertake care for patients identified as requiring urgent care by Multi-disciplinary Teams.
  • provide routine dental care to patients referred to, or accessing, the Special Care and Community Dental Service.
  • liaise with a range of social and other health care personnel and agencies to ensure the effective management of and delivery of care to patients with specific requirements.
  • be involved with the delivery of a domiciliary dental service to patients who may require such service.
  • deliver care, as required, in a variety of locations within the defined localities of Allerdale and Copeland.

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: 18 + Administration cost of 3.85 = 21.85. Deducted at 6.85 from 1st month salary and 5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • BDS or equivalent
  • FD obtained or equivalence proved
  • NHSE Performer List number.
  • Registration with General Dental Council (Dentist)
Experience
Essential
  • One year post-graduate clinical activity
Desirable
  • Experience of and an understanding of the challenges presented by special care patients.
  • Experience of dealing with confidential and sensitive material
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Proven experience and competence in routine minor oral surgery.
Knowledge
Essential
  • Structure of local NHS Dental services
  • Legislative framework governing the delivery of oral health care in England
  • Basic Life Support
Desirable
  • Contemporary knowledge of Specialist Society guidelines for clinical care
  • Knowledge of legislation and guidance around process of consent
  • Knowledge of current NHSE commissioning guidance for special care and paediatric dentistry
  • Knowledge of SOE dental software
Skills and Aptitudes
Essential
  • Ability to organise own workload and manage priorities.
  • Expertise in a range of clinical dentistry
  • Good interpersonal skills with citable examples of working as part of a wider dental team.
  • Empathy and understanding towards patients and other staff members.
Desirable
  • Demonstrable experience of audit
  • Experience of and an understanding of the challenges presented by special care patients.
  • Training in the use of conscious sedation
