Job summary
The Communications Directorate plays a critical role in delivering the critical areas of policy which the Home Office leads - keeping the streets safe and borders secure. This involves helping the department to spot and mitigate risks and deliver attitude and behaviour change that ultimately supports the security and economic prosperity of the UK.
The leadership team ensures there is a diverse, motivated and capable team in place to deliver this work, as well as providing support to the Permanent Secretaries and senior officials to deliver the Home Office's organisational strategy and build engagement among the Home Office workforce.
Job description
To be successful in this role, you will need to be able to draw on deep communications experience and a resilient, learning-orientated mindset as the basis of your professional and personal authority in a highly complex, contested and demanding area of public service.
As deputy director, the successful candidate will support the director in setting and maintaining outstanding professional standards in campaign delivery, leading leaders across all the communications disciplines, as well as continuing to grow team capability as challenges evolve.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high

An expert senior strategic advisor -
Influencing and advising ministers and senior officials, to ensure the audience voice is properly heard and a 'whole system', Mission-led approach is in place to meet core communications objectives across Secure Borders communications campaigns.
Campaign strategic direction and delivery
- Design and evolve strategic campaigns derived from the annual departmental communications strategy and wider Government Communications Plan. Support the director in using programme frameworks to set and maintain outstanding professional standards in campaign delivery.
Building capability
- Support and promote learning and development, effective performance management and staff retention and recruitment of diverse talent across one or more functional areas. Support the director's continuous improvement projects across GCS linked to the Home Office's role as a pathfinder department for GCS programmes.
Crisis response
- Lead communications teams in a crisis, have excellent awareness of the media environment and HMG crisis structures, with the personal resilience to provide direction and support over a sustained period.
Ownership of culture, behaviour, and values
- Set the culture of the communications function and its role in supporting the Home Office and its collaborative, compassionate, courageous, respectful and curious values. Exemplify GCS and wider Civil Service propriety and ethics standards.
