You will assist the Ward Manager in providing Leadership and Operational Management to the Ward ensuring the provision of quality nursing care to all service users on the ward/department. The post holder will assess, plan and implement care, and provide specialist nursing advice and carry out specialist nursing procedures in the agreed care group. You will provide clinical and managerial leadership to junior staff, providing supervision to junior staff and students.

Support the Ward Manager in the clinical and operational running of the ward



Support and supervise junior staff and students



Implement change on the ward to improve the quality of patient care and staff wellbeing



Provide preceptorship for newly qualified staff



To act as a role model within the team continually promoting a high

standard of care for all patients admitted to the ward, which is

effective and responsive to the needs of service users.



Act as bleep holder for the unit as required.

Education and Experience



Essential Criteria



NMC Registration



Evidence of Continuous Professional Development



Completion of preceptorship



Experience of working alongside people with severe mental health problems particularly in their acute phase of illness



Experience of supervising staff



Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team



Experience of conducting clinical assessments including risk assessments



Desirable Criteria



Experience of working within an Inpatient environment /PICU



Knowledge, Skills and Experience



Essential Criteria



Knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g. Mental Heath Act (1983).



Awareness of research methods and clinical audit cycle



Ability to utilize evidence-based clinical assessments and therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group.



Excellent written and oral communication skills



Ability to communicate in a clear and unambiguous way



Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills



Ability to develop effective professional relationships with others



Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships



Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters overcoming any differences in communication



Develop own skills and knowledge and provide information to others to help their development



Participate in partnership working with individuals, groups, communities and agencies



Organising and co-ordinating the activities of others within the ward

environment



Co-ordinating ward meetings



Desirable Criteria



Demonstrate knowledge of the carers agenda.



Demonstrate a knowledge of gender specific issues within inpatient services.



Planning off-duty rotas



Implementation of quality improvements



Other Essential Criteria



Work an internal rotation across 24 hours, 7 days a week, including

bank holidays.



Ability to carry out PMVA Training



Ability to administer medication as required.



Ability to use manual handling techniques.



There is an occasional requirement to travel across the wide footprint of the Trust to attend meetings and events relevant to the role
