Job Description


Our client has successfully secured a very large fire detection and alarm system design contract on the construction of a new nuclear power station.

Due to this workload, we are looking for Fire Safety Design Engineers to join their growing team.

The post holder will be responsible for designing a compliant system and creating the supporting documentation for this, to include; drawings, schematics, reports and electrical calculations.

Key objectives:

  • Working with the Senior Design Engineer, the Design Engineer will create the system layout and design for several entire buildings in the HK5312 project in parallel and, according to nuclear standards, verify designs for the fire detection system in a nuclear power plant including all related components based on UK fire detection rules and related BS standards such as BS 5839-1, BS 9999 etc.
  • Reporting to a Senior Design Engineer, the Design Engineer will have knowledge of current British Standards relating to Fire Detection and experience in the design, development and installation of large scale fire detection and suppression systems.
  • The successful candidate will need to manage all relevant aspects of the project ensuring tasks and objectives are completed on time.
Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Preparing project documentation and plans
  • Schedule control and follow-up
  • Quality verification
  • Project document management and coordination
  • Preparing and coordinating conventional permit applications.
  • Develop operator\'s manuals, safety manuals, manual supplements and instruction sheets for the project.
  • Produce high-quality documentation that meets applicable standards, uses easy-to-understand user interface text, and is appropriate for its intended audience.
  • Work with internal teams to obtain an in-depth understanding of the product, specifications, and the documentation requirements.
  • Analyse existing and potential content, focusing on reuse and single-sourcing opportunities, maintain and improve formatting, layout, use of CAD drawings.
  • Manage proper naming conventions, revision control, and file storing procedures.
  • Create and maintain the information architecture (layout & design) distribute and track original electronic document files in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • In accordance with the Designer Capability Statement check and verify documentation and designs completed by engineers with a lower SQEP level.
Experience:
  • HND/OND (desirable but not essential)
  • Knowledge and experience working with and designing to BS5839 Part 1 (essential)
  • Experience in design/commissioning fire alarm systems in the nuclear industry and/or major construction projects (essential)
  • Competent in generating technical documents and specifications (essential)
  • Experience in using Auto CAD system (desirable)
  • Experience in using Navis works (desirable).
  • HND/OND (desirable but not essential) Knowledge and experience working with and designing to BS5839 Part 1 (desirable but not essential)
  • Previous experience in similar tasks in nuclear plant and/or major construction projects
  • Competent in generating technical documents and specifications
  • Experience in using CAD system
