We believe that our strength is not just in our steel but the diversity of our workforce. Our people make the difference.
At Tata Steel, we're not just shaping steel - we're shaping the future. We're currently looking for a Design Engineer to join our Central Engineering team and play a key role in designing innovative engineering solutions that support major capital projects, plant improvements, and maintenance excellence.
What you will do:
As a Senior Design Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership and deliver a full-spectrum mechanical design service across our UK strip products operations in Port Talbot and Llanwern. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external engineering partners, you'll turn complex challenges into robust, practical solutions that meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.
This is a dynamic, hands-on role, combining both plant and office-based work, including site visits to fully understand design requirements and ensure successful implementation. Your role will include;
Leading the development of mechanical designs to support capital projects and improve plant performance
Approve and validate in-house designs and evaluate those from third-party suppliers
Provide expertise to resolve plant and equipment failures or inefficiencies
Collaborate across technical teams, project engineers, and engineering partners
Ensuring compliance with quality assurance and regulatory standards
Using CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microstation) to deliver high-quality design outputs
Mentoring and supporting other engineers to share best practice and develop design capability across the team
What you will need:
To thrive in this role, you'll bring a strong foundation in mechanical engineering, combined with hands-on experience delivering practical design solutions in a complex industrial environment. You'll be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with at least five years' experience in a similar role, ideally within manufacturing, heavy industry, or capital project settings.
As an experienced Design Engineer, you'll be comfortable in using CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microstation). You'll need to be confident carrying out engineering design calculations, particularly those related to mechanical components and basic structural fabrications. A solid understanding of relevant engineering standards, material specifications, and safety regulations, such as the Health & Safety at Work Act, is essential.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are key. You'll be expected to present ideas clearly, collaborate with engineers and project teams, and represent the Design Office in discussions with external partners and technical suppliers. A proactive approach to mentoring others and a willingness to share your knowledge across the team is highly valued.
