The Vacancy:
Purpose of the role:
To work with members of the Sales, Product Management and Applications teams and other appropriate functions, in the design and development of technical and product solutions in response to customer and sales enquiries.
Supports Production, Pre-production, Purchasing and other appropriate functions to resolve issues surrounding legacy product manufacture and associated requests, including PRES, Source Change, drawing enquiries etc. and other associated activities required to ensure ongoing production capability.
Duties and responsibilities:
Contributes to the Design workload as required.
Designs, verifies, prepares and maintains detailed 3D models, technical design drawings, schematics and specifications using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (currently Creo) and other software packages (including Excel, Word etc) ready for manufacture.
Able to prioritise tasks and progress all work in accordance with published plans and requirements and report progress as required.
Works with Pre-Production to prepare Manufacturing & Process Instructions as required for both new and existing products.
Resolves manufacturing and other identified issues in both the early stages of product design and development, as well as responding to requests for assistance to resolve issues with existing products by PRES, Source Change process etc.
Works closely with design briefs and other specifications to resolve design details or discrepancies, or to prepare drawings of unusual, complex, or original designs which require a high degree of precision using CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) equipment.
Identifies engineering risks and sole source issues in the development of new products, achieves efficient product & information handover to internal customers.
Generates Design Documentation as part of product development, including Compliance Matrix, DFMEA, Engineering Material Cost Analysis, Test Specification, Test Request and supporting ERD's as required.
Coordinates drawing and drawing control activities.
Possesses good understanding of current and emerging manufacturing methods, ensuring that product development manufacturing needs are correctly aligned.
Interfaces as necessary with both internal and external customers during the design process.
Supports the design and development of prototype components, test equipment and test jigs / fixtures as required.
Ensures products are developed to achieve compliance with design objectives and associated compliance matrix and test requirements.
Provides a formal handover of designed product to the Manufacturing Process Engineering group, via pre-production process & design reviews.
Adherence to current Amphenol policies typically including COSHH for the introduction of new materials/chemicals into test, development or Production.
Carries out such other duties that may be reasonably requested.
Person Specification:
Essential Criteria
Qualifications
Minimum BEng level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Scientific subject
Currently or working towards Chartered/Incorporated Engineer status and member of Professional Engineering Institution.
Experience
Minimum 3 years Design Engineering experience preferably in Automotive or Aerospace manufacturing industry
Experienced using CREO or similar 3D CAD and product lifecycle management software
Experience of design for manufacture and design for assembly
NPI Gate review process/ Production readiness
Technical Knowledge
Mechanical bias knowledge with some electrical familiarity
Good understanding of GD&T and creation of detail and manufacturing drawings to BS8888 or similar
Understanding of following design development process including risk assessment and DFMEA, DFM/A (design for manufacture and assembly)
Skills & Competencies
Understanding manufacturing processes and tolerances
Ability to clearly communicate technical information to technical and non-technical colleagues
Strong interpersonal and team working skills
Ability to manage self and work to meet deadlines under pressure
Desirable Criteria
Experience
Familiar with AS9100, AS13100, AS9145 (APQP)
Previous experience of material selection, with understanding of plating finishes
Previous experience of mechanical properties of materials, with experience of simulation and physical test to prove out design
Experience of design reviews and ensuring production problems are robust and the product is produced to the desired quality
Technical Knowledge
Electrical knowledge with Mechanical skills
A good understanding of the NPI process and getting products into manufacture
