The Design Manager is responsible to the Programme Engineering Manager for design development aspects and has a key role throughout the project lifecycle. The Design Manager will ensure the successful delivery of the design aspects for a capital infrastructure programme and will ensure that team members are provided with direction and support to lead, manage and deliver design scopes for their domain.
This role will work closely with the Design Project Manager who will support on project management aspects, and the Lead Engineers who will lead their respective engineering domains. The candidate will be required to deliver at pace and demonstrate effective engineering judgement, management skills, tools and techniques.
The purpose of the role is to manage the delivery and co-ordinate the technical engineering work packages to required scope, quality, schedule, and cost. This will include planning for and supporting integration with internal project stakeholder groups as well as external customer stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities of the Design Manager:
Managing a team of multi discipline engineers.
Leading working groups, meetings and reviews with Consultant / Contractors
Leading delivery of technical packages of work.
Management of design changes/concessions.
Review and management of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
Providing periodic review of Safety reports.
Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
Co-ordination of Independent Technical Review (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR) processes with Authorising Authorities.
Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant civil/structural design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors.
Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other members of staff.
Produce and improve technical processes.
Qualifications and experiences required for the Design Manager:
Essential
SC security clearance, or the ability to obtain in advance of employment.
Accredited degree in an appropriate 'STEM' discipline.
Wealth of experience and ability to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of large scale and complex design development throughout the design lifecycle.
Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements.
Strong understanding and experience of working in BIM environments.
Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
Sound understanding of procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety and Quality requirements.
Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications.
Desirable:
Chartered membership of relevant engineering professional body
Experience working on nuclear licenced site or a similar high-risk environment.
Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g., HAZID/HAZOP studies.
Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components.
Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear specific codes and standards.
