Job Description

Design & Manufacturing Engineer

Your Pivotal Role in Shaping Coughtrie's Future

Based in Hillington, Glasgow, Coughtrie International has been manufacturing luminaires for arduous environments since 1940. The Coughtrie brand holds a reputation for fast lead time, excellent customer service and great quality.

Due to growth of the business, there are now a further two brands - J&G Coughtrie and Montrose Manufacturing.

J&G Coughtrie serves the market with iconic luminaires that were designed some 50 years ago, are highly desirable still in circulation today. These classic fittings are used across a multitude of applications ranging from the last paddle steamer in Scotland - The Waverley - to period homes.

Montrose Manufacturing is our sub-contract brand which provides custom cables, looms, PLCs and mechanical sub-assemblies.

Relentless focus on product excellence, on-time delivery and customer experience are at the heart of everything we do and as part of the ongoing design investment we have created a new and exciting position within our engineering department.

Why This Role Matters

As our

Design & Manufacturing Engineer

, you will be at the heart of everything we do: keeping our legendary fixtures in production today, powering bespoke contract-manufacturing projects tomorrow, and inventing the breakthrough products that will define our next century. You'll be the bridge between vision and reality, turning bold ideas into durable, precision-engineered lighting solutions across all three of our brands.

What You'll Own

End-to-End Innovation

Lead projects "from cradle to grave"; take existing designs across the finish line or ignite entirely new ones. Apply DFMA best practices to slash costs and supercharge manufacturability.

High-Impact 3D Engineering

Master the art of craft models and drawings that become production reality. Rapidly prototype in sheet metal, 3D print, die cast, or injection mould--and prove your designs in the hands of end users.

Game-Changing Production Support

Own the shop-floor troubleshooting process: design custom jigs/fixtures, resolve process snarls, and keep our lines humming. Generate crystal-clear work instructions and manage BOMs in our ERP so every part, every time, is right first time.

Strategic Supplier Partnerships

Scout and qualify suppliers in the UK and overseas--your technical briefs will ensure we get top-tier parts and tooling on-time, on-spec. Lead FMEA workshops that pre-empt risks, secure reliability, and safeguard Coughtrie's reputation for decades-lasting performance.

Quality & Compliance Stewardship

Conduct first-article inspections and enforce ISO 9001 standards--your eagle eye ensures nothing ships without sign-off. Drive continuous improvement initiatives that make our processes more robust, efficient, and future-proof.
