The position exists to provide technical support within British Steel Testing Solutions to ensure that the Analytical Chemistry Laboratories provide accurate and timely data to facilitate the efficient operation/control of the work.
This would comprise ensuring the purchase of correct (fit-for-purpose) instruments/equipment, instrument calibration, troubleshooting, method development (& validation to appropriate QA standards), trial work and commissioning of new equipment. The Job Holder will use personal skills and unique competencies to carry out the non-routine technical and investigative work.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure full compliance with all Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) requirements for both personal and contractor activities, delivering real?time adherence in day?to?day operations.
Communicate performance updates against established goals and collaborate with external technical specialists when required.
Identify competency needs and coordinate training for new or updated procedures, processes and equipment.
Develop, maintain and continuously improve systems used to monitor asset performance, ensuring all supporting documentation meets ISO and other accreditation standards.
Lead non-conformance investigations, ensuring accurate reporting and timely corrective actions.
Provide specialist technical support to ensure Analytical Chemistry Laboratories maintain robust systems and methods that meet agreed customer requirements.
Maintain a thorough understanding of laboratory equipment, service needs, capabilities and limitations to drive continuous improvement across Testing Solutions.
Lead investigations and method development to introduce and optimise new testing capabilities.
Research and promote best practices to align Testing Solutions activities, ensuring all work meets required QA standards and approvals.
Keep testing procedures, equipment knowledge, standards and specifications up to date, ensuring accurate information is available for customers, auditors, inspectors and technical teams.
Manage proficiency testing schemes and round?robin activities, ensuring accurate interpretation and clear communication of results to support timely corrective action where needed.
Provide expert input into root cause analysis activities to eliminate recurring issues and support long?term process reliability.
What we need to know about you
Ability to influence key stakeholders in Testing Solutions up to senior management level.
The implementation and operation of complex testing facilities.
Good training skills to pass knowledge onto operational staff.
A self-starter and able to work comfortably in technical teams.
Knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001 & 17025
Educated to degree level or equivalent in a chemical science discipline or possess in-depth experience of testing techniques and equipment.
