The University of Birmingham Estates Office is responsible for both the master planning and stewardship of our extensive estate. Our team is made up of over 180 dedicated members of staff, including 10 apprentices studying Mechanical or Electrical qualifications over a 4-year scheme; all striving to deliver a world class university experience for the benefit of all students, staff, academics and visitors. After our staff, our physical estate is the largest single enabler for our world-class teaching, research and providing a fantastic student experience.


Our estate is large and varied covering 672 acres, with over 300 buildings of different ages, complexities, physical condition and use, ranging from grade 1 and 2 listed properties to brand new state of the art learning and research spaces. It consists of two main campus sites (Edgbaston & Selly Oak) along with properties in Stratford upon Avon,Ansty (near Coventry), Coniston (in Cumbria), Ironbridge and Dubai. The total gross internal area of the estate is 538,000 m 2 . 74% of the non-residential estate is in building condition A and B and we typically spend circa 9M on energy and water each year.


We are committed to sustainability and have achieved a 20% reduction in CO 2 four years ahead of target and we generate 75% of our own energy via on site combined heat and power plants. Furthermore, we continue to reduce our carbon footprint by 3,000 tonnes per year on average and maintain more than 9,200 trees.


Role Summary



The Team are directly responsible for the delivery and management of a number of functions. This includes


Building Information Modelling and Digital Twin processes and models, through capital delivery and maintenance of the models; Ownership of Document and Information Management processes for delivery on Capital new build and refurbishment projects; Space and Property Management, for space data management and space utilisation across the university.
The post holder will apply expert knowledge of systems and information management to oversee data within the Common Data Environment (CDE), ensuring effective document control and reporting across all aspects of Digital Information Management within Estates.


The role will lead and manage the processes and submissions for the Estate Management Record and estate data required for TRAC (Transparent Approach to Costing). It will also take the lead on benchmarking activities and conduct in-depth spatial analysis to support strategic planning and evidence-based decision-making.


Main Duties



Building Information Modelling and Information Management



Lead on the development of Information Management process across the Estates portfolio and remit and the provision of periodic reviews for data quality and enhancements Ensure successful collaboration on the Common Data Environment (CDE) and support successful processing of information through workflows. Push the boundaries of analysing, interpreting and presenting large quantities of data and converting data into a presentable format for a variety of audiences to inform decision making and information validation. Support the UoB BIM Requirements and Information Management Requirements and suggest improvements as required during the course of projects, providing updates where required. Using technical expertise of the area, efficiently manage and audit BIM models for level of detail and level of information at each of RIBA design stages as required at each information exchange through to operation. Working with Estates supply chain, facilitate the successful delivery of project O&M's into the CDE and manage the process of information validation within the timescales. Ensuring that data systems are fit for purpose and are used effectively to optimise functionality and efficient clear reporting for senior management.

Systems and Information



Leading on the management of data and system integration projects, including influencing and developing complex project plans Creating and maintaining an overall project management plan for the whole project or projects using project management principles and using appropriate software Identifying objectives and indicators of success Establish effective networking relationships with all stakeholders Delivering data project outputs agreed with senior management, on time, to budget and to the agreed quality standard

Space



Own and manage the annual space validation process, liaising with Schools and Services to ensure accurate and timely completion Working with key stakeholders, design and deliver analytical documentation, dashboards using Power BI, and predictive models to support senior-level decision-making and business intelligence reporting for space efficiency Manage the space data held in the RVT models and CAFM

People Management



Manage diverse groups of staff ensuring relevant targets and goals are achieved within resource constraints. Create a motivating environment where staff are challenged, developed, encouraged and supported to achieve outstanding results. Line management responsibility for the BIM Co-ordinator and the Apprentice Space and Data Analyst Identify appropriate opportunities for development and change and encourage other team members to do the same.

General



Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively promoting positive behaviour. Supports the University's sustainability agenda through resource efficient working. Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience



Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plussignificant relevant practical experience - where no equivalent qualification is held substantial practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required. Evidence of authoritative knowledge and practical application of scalable information management practices in BIM and Digital Twin environments. Significant experience of analysing, interpreting and presenting large quantities of data using tools such as Power Bi, Tableau with a high degree of accuracy Proven ability to meet targets and managing multiple projects simultaneously. Experience of managing a team and developing colleagues. Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills. Able to explain complex information to and influence senior colleagues. High level of self-motivation and personal accountability with ability to plan and deliver goals to deadlines under pressure Authoritative knowledge of the work practices, processes and procedures relevant to the role, including broader sector/commercial awareness. Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area. Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
