Would you like to be part of a dynamic development and systems team within the Digital Library at the University of Edinburgh? Our team develops innovative software solutions, installs, integrates and supports third-party products, and actively participates in collaborative open-source projects.
The Opportunity:
This position will begin by focusing on important development work on our newly developed digital preservation solution. It will entail designing and implementing digital preservation workflows from our wide-ranging systems through Archivematica and into long-term storage, working closely alongside the Digital Archivist to align with digital preservation best practice. You will also work on our suite of tools supporting research data sharing and preservation, meeting funder requirements to store research datasets for the long-term.
This role would suit someone interested in cultural heritage and institutional history with strong API development, integration and problem-solving skills. You will be working closely with colleagues across Library and University Collections and the wider university community, actively engaged in improving the Digital Preservation service. This is a great opportunity to contribute back to the open-source community which will be encouraged.
We are looking for a talented and passionate software developer with excellent technical and communication skills to fill this role.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.
The salary for this post is 40,497 to 48,149 per annum.
Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Excellent software development skills including requirements analysis and software design
  • Experience of developing web applications using a variety of programming languages such as Java, PHP or Python and a familiarity with web development frameworks and APIs
  • Experience with source code version control and knowledge of Release Management and Automated Deployment/Continuous Integration tools
  • Proven ability to learn new technologies and apply new skills effectively in a range of business contexts
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a flexible approach to problem resolution and an ability to deal appropriately with changing requirements
