Director Of Ip & Product (legal)

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Job Description

As a two-sided business that empowers consumers and helps good businesses grow, we're seeking a Director of IP & Product (Legal) who has a keen interest in the intersection of law, product, and technology. You'll combine strong business acumen with the ability to digest complex information quickly and turn it into clear, compelling advice that enables innovation, protects our platform, and builds trust.
Sitting at the intersection of law, product development, and business strategy, this role will be instrumental in protecting and enhancing the value of Trustpilot's intellectual property portfolio. You'll lead IP strategy across trademarks, copyrights, and emerging technologies, whilst partnering closely with product and engineering teams to facilitate innovation within a robust legal framework.
If you thrive on solving complex challenges, know how to balance legal rigour with commercial pragmatism, and can translate intricate intellectual property matters into clear business guidance that bolsters growth and safeguards our platform, this role is for you.
What you'll be doing:

  • Set and deliver legal strategy. Define and lead Trustpilot's global IP strategy, with a focus on trademarks and copyrights, and the opportunity to broaden. Act as product counsel, partnering with product and engineering teams to advise across the entire product lifecycle, from concept to launch and maintenance, ensuring our products are both innovative and compliant.
  • Lead on complex matters and provide pragmatic legal advice. You'll shape and guide external conversations, translating complex legal and regulatory challenges into actionable business strategies. You'll need to establish robust frameworks and make pragmatic, risk-based decisions that balance business goals with legal, regulatory, and reputational considerations.
  • Inspire and enable others. Mentor and support colleagues across Legal and the wider business, cultivating a high-performing, collaborative culture.
Who you are:
  • An experienced, qualified lawyer with in-house experience in the technology sector, with Saas and platform experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of intellectual property law and demonstrated experience in providing counsel on the legal and compliance issues tied to product development.
  • You're commercially minded and pragmatic, with the judgement to balance risk and opportunity.
  • You're adept at working at pace, simplifying complexity, and influencing stakeholders at all levels, including executives and the board.
  • Interested in the interplay between the law, technology, and policy, and motivated to help shape the future of a trusted global platform.
What's in it for you:
  • A range of flexible working options to dedicate time to what matters to you
  • Competitive compensation package + bonus
  • Restricted Stock Units
  • 25 days holiday per year, increasing to 28 days after 2 years of employment
  • Private Medical Insurance
  • Critical Illness Cover
  • Two (paid) volunteering days a year to spend your time giving back to the causes that matter to you and your community
  • Rich learning and development opportunities are supported through the Trustpilot Academy and Blinkist
  • Pension and life insurance
  • Health cash plan, online GP, 24/7 Employee Assistance Plan
  • Full access to Headspace, a popular mindfulness app to promote positive mental health
  • Paid parental leave
  • Season ticket loan and a cycle-to-work scheme
  • Central office location, complete with all the snacks and refreshments you can ask for
  • Regular opportunities to connect and get to know your fellow Trusties, including company-wide celebrations and events, ERG activities, and team socials
  • Access to over 4,000 deals and discounts on things like travel, electronics, fashion, fitness, cinema discounts, and more.
Still not sure?
We want to be a part of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world of work for all. We're excited to hear about your experiences as well as how you will contribute to our working culture. So, even if you don't feel you don't meet all the requirements, we'd still really like to hear from you!
