Office-based at one of our Women's Centres in Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield or Wakefield, with regular travel to all Together Women locations in Yorkshire and Humberside.

Role Summary



This is a senior leadership role, where the postholder will shape and deliver a comprehensive workforce strategy that ensures our policies, practices, and culture are legally compliant, values-led, and grounded in trauma-informed principles. With responsibility for the full employee lifecycle, the Director will champion staff wellbeing, equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring Together Women remains an employer of choice within the women's sector.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director will work closely with the CEO and Board to align people strategy with organisational priorities, building workforce capacity to deliver high-quality services across Yorkshire and Humberside. They will provide expert leadership on complex HR, employee relations, and organisational development matters, acting as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and managers.

In addition to leading our HR function, the role holds oversight for facilities, health and safety, and organisational resources, ensuring consistent compliance, safe working environments, and cost-effective procurement across all sites. The Director will also drive digital transformation of HR systems, the use of workforce data and analytics, and the development of reward and benefit strategies.

Key Accountabilities



Strategic People Leadership



Lead the development and delivery of Together Women's People Strategy, aligning workforce planning with organisational priorities and long-term sustainability. Ensure high-quality, efficient, and legally compliant HR operations across the organisation, with systems and policies rooted in values, inclusivity, and trauma-informed practice. Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board, and senior leaders on all people-related matters, including complex employee relations, organisational change, and workforce risk management. Drive the digital transformation of HR systems and analytics, ensuring workforce data informs decision-making and strategic planning. Commission and oversee relationships with external HR, legal, and professional support providers to ensure best practice and value.

Recruitment, Onboarding and Retention



Lead inclusive and innovative recruitment and retention strategies to attract and retain a diverse, skilled, and values-led workforce. Oversee onboarding and induction processes, ensuring all staff feel welcomed, supported, and set up for success. Embed workforce diversity and representation as a core priority, monitoring progress and reporting to the Senior Leadership Team and Board. Develop a reward and benefits strategy that supports engagement, wellbeing, and retention.

Learning, Development and Organisational Development



Design and deliver a comprehensive learning and development framework for all staff, ensuring opportunities for growth, progression, and leadership development. Lead succession planning and talent management, preparing the organisation for future workforce needs. Evaluate training and development impact, ensuring programmes are evidence-based and aligned to organisational goals. Foster a culture of continuous learning and reflective practice across the organisation.

Facilities, Health & Safety and Resources



Provide strategic oversight of Together Women's premises and facilities, ensuring safe, accessible, and welcoming environments across all centres. Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain robust risk management processes. Oversee procurement and supplier management to ensure value for money and sustainability in the use of organisational resources. Lead on leases, utilities, and contracts related to premises, working closely with Finance to ensure effective resource planning.

Culture, Equity and Staff Wellbeing



Champion Together Women's values, ensuring they are embedded across all policies, practices, and systems. Lead the embedding of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy, with measurable outcomes that advance anti-racism, gender equity, and lived experience leadership. Promote staff wellbeing through proactive policies, initiatives, and engagement, ensuring Together Women is recognised as a supportive and progressive employer. Shape and maintain an organisational culture that is collaborative, inclusive, and empowering, placing women at the centre of all we do.

Role Requirements / Person Specification



Experience and knowledge



Essential



Significant leadership experience (minimum 7 years) in senior HR/People roles, ideally at Head of HR/Director level. CIPD Level 7 or equivalent HR/OD qualification, with evidence of continuous professional development. Proven track record of designing and delivering workforce strategies that drive organisational performance and culture change. Demonstrable experience of leading inclusive recruitment, retention, and workforce development strategies. In-depth knowledge of UK employment law, HR best practice, and organisational risk management. Experience of implementing and optimising HR systems, data analytics, and performance frameworks. Strong track record of managing complex employee relations issues, restructures, and organisational change programmes. Experience in overseeing facilities, health & safety, and resource management at a strategic level. Skilled in negotiating and managing relationships with external contractors, suppliers, and professional advisors. Understanding of systemic issues faced by women affected by the criminal justice system, and commitment to trauma-informed and gender-responsive practice.

Desirable



Experience working in women's services, voluntary/community sector, or criminal justice settings. Experience of leading positive change in relation to equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism, with measurable outcomes. Experience of developing and embedding wellbeing strategies in complex organisations. Familiarity with digital transformation and the use of HR technology to improve staff experience and efficiency.

Skills and Abilities



Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable people and resource strategies. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to influence and build trust at all levels including Board and external partners. Skilled in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making under pressure. Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities across complex organisational structures. Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop others. Values-driven, collaborative, and resilient, with a commitment to learning and continuous improvement. Skilled in interpreting workforce data and using insights to inform organisational decisions. Committed to safeguarding, anti-discriminatory practice, and creating safe and inclusive workplaces.

Other Requirements



Fluent in the use of Microsoft 365 and HR information systems. Able to travel across Yorkshire, Humberside, and nationally as required. Willingness to work some evenings and weekends (infrequent). Commitment to anti-racism and equity, diversity, and inclusion, embedding these principles into all areas of work. Commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of women and people facing disadvantage and discrimination in the criminal justice system
