The Vehicle Engineering Director is responsible for the technical programme leadership of all vehicle programmes at Gordon Murray Advanced Engineering (GMAE). This pivotal role is to ensure programmes are delivered on time, to cost and quality targets, as well as seamless integration between engineering, development, and production readiness activities.
This role is responsible for leading all Chief Engineers & Simulation engineering ensuring that engineering maturity, technical targets, and all vehicle programme objectives are aligned throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Programme LeadershipProvide executive-level oversight and governance across all vehicle programmes.
Lead programme planning, milestone definition, risk management, and stakeholder reporting.
Ensure alignment of technical content with programme deliverables, budget and timing.
Technical GovernanceChampion robust engineering processes, gate reviews and configuration control.
Ensure technical alignment across systems engineering, integration, and architecture.
Drive resolution of engineering issues impacting timing, performance or programme delivery.
Engineering ResponsibilityManage and develop the Chief Engineers responsible for the overall technical delivery of each vehicle programme
Coordinating vehicle engineering, collaborating with both physical and virtual validation activities.
Ensure vehicle-level attributes (performance, safety, quality, cost) are clearly defined and achieved.
Own the virtual simulation strategy.
Support and challenge engineering decision-making to maintain technical integrity.
Balance technical innovation with design for manufacturability, serviceability and compliance.
Maintain strong cross-functional engagement with design, development, purchasing and manufacturing.
Team LeadershipBuild, manage and inspire a high-performing vehicle engineering and programme team.
Develop future leaders and succession planning within the Chief Engineer and Programme teams.
Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and customer focus.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Significant experience in a senior vehicle engineering and/or programme leadership role in the automotive or advanced engineering sector.
Proven track record of delivering complex vehicle programmes from concept to launch.
Strong understanding of vehicle systems, integration, and cross-functional programme delivery.
Experience managing cross-discipline engineering & project teams.
Strong leadership, stakeholder management and commercial awareness.
Degree in Automotive, Mechanical or Systems Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Experience in niche, low-volume, or high-performance vehicle programmes.
