The opportunity
OTPP is a leading global institutional investor, with over $260M CAD in assets under management and the Equities division is one of the most important parts of the fund, with over $70B CAD of assets under management (both through direct investments and public investments). The EMEA region holds a significant portion of thse direct private equity investments. We have an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative, high performing team of private equity investors. Value Creation capabilities have recently been centralized across the fund into a newly established group called Portfolio Solutions Group (PSG) in order to drive greater focus on delivering value creation plans pre and post deal during our ownership.
The VC Team is a highly valued partner to deal teams, management teams, and Ontario Teachers' global leadership.
In this position, you will partner with our deal teams and portfolio companies in EMEA across the lifecycle of our investments, from diligence through exit. In particular, you will support our EMEA deal teams to evaluate new opportunities, develop and help execute Value Creation Plans (VCPs) for direct investments, accelerate specific value levers, and ensure we have the right talent in the right roles. You will work across multiple functional areas with a great opportunity to have a meaningful impact across the portfolio. You will report to the Global Head of Value Creation for Equities who is based in London.
Who you will work with
Based in London, you will join a dynamic, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with deal team investment professionals, CEOs and their senior leadership teams, Boards of Directors, and external advisors. You will also work with colleagues across OTPP, leading or supporting initiatives that straddle all private investments, with a close focus on control or co-lead deals. In all instances, you will have the opportunity to work with talented, collegial and hardworking experienced individuals. Moreover, as a senior member of Portfolio Solutions, you will actively contribute to the overall best in class approaches across the global portfolio as Portfolio Solutions scales its approach. You will be a core member of this newly created group, which comprises about 30 individuals globally.
What you will do
You will have several responsibilities and objectives, including:Partnering and building strong relationships with the EMEA direct investing team so that you are seen as a true partner to their teams;
Working across multiple industry sectors and functional areas to identify and drive opportunities to build value within OTPP's portfolio companies;
Developing Value Creation Plans and initiatives (VCPs) for new and existing investments. VCP development includes identifying the full potential opportunity of the business, architecting the key initiatives that will drive value during our investment horizon, as well as developing detailed KPIs, mobilisation plans and progress tracking tools to ensure successful execution;
Leading specific projects with portfolio company executives in EMEA to achieve full potential value in close coordination with Value Creation leadership and deal teams;
Supporting deal teams on due diligence for new potential investments;
Articulating your findings and recommendations in a pragmatic which are actionable and implementable;
Scoping and overseeing work done by 3rd party advisors in portfolio companies within our EMEA portfolio and supporting coverage reviews that coordinate best in class services across Equities activities;
Evaluating implications to current operating models, organisational structures and identifying additional support that may be required to achieve results;
Leading cross-portfolio projects which are driven by the VCT; and
Partnering with the global Portfolio Management team (which is a separate team) to increase the effectiveness of our monitoring and support of the Equities portfolio.
Over the next two years in this role, the Director, Value Creation, Equities (EMEA) will have delivered on the following:Delivered tangible value in key investments by implementing specific action plans together with management teams and with support from specialist resources when needed;
Created repeatable demand for yourself among the EMEA deal teams (and potentially other deal teams) and portfolio company management teams;
Built strong working relationships with portfolio management teams;
Supported diligence on selected new investments;
Proven your repeated ability to perform outstanding analysis and support to our portfolio companies, and to build strong relationships with deal teams and portfolio company management teams
Ensured new investments are successfully onboarded and that comprehensive VCPs are put in place with strong collaboration with portco management teams;
Helped build out best practices as identified by the Portfolio Solutions Group
What you will need
You have a minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience, including the following:Undergraduate degree; and post-graduate degree or MBA;
Experience at a top tier management consulting firm, within an operating company, or in a similar private equity operational role - ideal candidates will have a strong understanding of how private equity works;
Previous experience identifying and driving improvements in operations (supply chain, procurement, manufacturing, etc.) and/or top line growth (revenue management, sales force effectiveness, marketing, etc.);
Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth, critical analysis, and formulate value creation plans;
Strong communications skills;
Self-starter with a positive, team orientated demeanour;
Exceptional EQ skills and ability to build positive relationships with colleagues, with low ego;
Strategic and flexible problem solver with a structured approach and a practical bias to drive impact;
Excellent professional written and oral communication skills;
Ability to influence senior executives to gain support for your point of view, as well as build consensus; and
Ability and willingness to travel regularly across EMEA and be part of shaping a global value creation team
Familiarity with 1-2 European languages is an added bonus
