Job Description

Due to retirement we are seeking an additional fully qualified dispenser to join our team. The vacancy is to work 24 hours per week, Wednesday - Friday inclusive with the flexibility to cover sickness and holidays. We are fully integrated with TPP Systmone and Titan PMR.

JOB DESCRIPTION



POSITION: Dispenser

HOURS: 24 hours per week

PENSION SCHEME: NHS Occupational Pension Scheme (optional)

REPORTS TO: Practice Manager/Lead Dispenser

MAIN PURPOSE



To dispense medication for those patients registered with the Practice.

Ensure accuracy in labelling of drug name, strength, quantity and direction for use

To adhere to the strictest confidentiality when handling medical records and other information pertaining to patients and staff

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Duties may vary under the direction of the GP Partners and Practice Manager and Lead Dispenser, depending on workload and staffing levels and may include the following:

Communicating effectively using email, telephone, and face-to-face regarding enquiries from patients, pharmacies, hospitals, hospices and suppliers

Process prescription requests received via email, post, face-to-face and online

Ensuring all repeat prescriptions are processed within a 48-hour timeframe

Sorting post-dated prescriptions and submitting unsigned prescription to the GP Partners

Dispensing medicines to the entitled population safely and accurately

Ensuring controlled drugs are dispensed with in accordance with practice policy, providing a second check on all medication as issued Disposing of returned or expired controlled drugs according of Practice guidelines and Health Authority protocol
Processing Dossett boxes

To be responsible for checking all medicines dispensed, ensuring there are no discrepancies

Maintaining stock levels within the dispensary, liaising with the Lead Dispenser to facilitate reordering

Checking medications for expiry dates and maintain stock rotation

Receiving and storing supplies in accordance with current policy, ensuring the cold chain is maintained where applicable

Safe disposal of returned and / or out of date medicines

Providing patients with advice regarding all prescription matters

Liaising with members of clinical staff regarding the medication of individual patients

Assisting the Lead Dispenser in the preparation of monthly prescription payment returns

Maintain accurate records at all times, read coding entries appropriately

Collecting prescription charges in accordance with dispensary protocol

Ensure Standard Operating Procedures are read and understood

Taking informed and appropriate action should any drug alert bulletins be received

Remain current with the latest guidance ensuring the dispensary conforms to NICE, CQC etc guidance

Maintaining a clean safe and hygienic working environment within the dispensary, ensuring the area is free from hazards, maintaining familiarity with COSHH regulations

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Maintaining a thorough understanding of health and safety for oneself and others Using security systems within the Practice as instructed Identifying potential risks within the Practice environment and undertaking to minimise such risks Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and training of health and safety guidelines Understanding and utilising appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining hygiene in work areas and keeping the premises free from hazards Immediate reporting of potential risks as identified

In the undertaking of the duties outlined above the post-holder may have access to sensitive information relating to patients, carers and Practice staff. This must be kept strictly confidential at all times. Patients seeking information from the Practice do so in confidence and as such have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately Practice policies and procedures relating the protection of personal and sensitive data must be adhered to at all times and only divulged to authorised persons The post-holder will support the equality, diversity and rights of patients in a manner that is consistent with Practice policies and legislation
The privacy, dignity and beliefs of patients, carers and colleagues must be respected

The post-holder should behave in a manner which is welcoming, non-judgmental and respectful of the circumstances and rights all of all visitors to the Practice

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT



The post-holder will participate in any training programme deemed appropriate by the Practice Manager and Lead Dispenser which may include:

An annual individual performance review, to include the contribution and record of own personal and professional development and discussing targets for the future Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills to other members of staff when required Attending training sessions within the Practice whether online or face to face Attending any external training course thought appropriate to the role

CONTRIBUTION TO THE PRACTICE



The post-holder will be expected to:

Maintain and apply Practice policies and seek to uphold standards Discuss Practice policies with other members of the team and seek to implement new services and quality standards where appropriate Participate in audit when required Be prepared to help cover sickness and annual leave absences within the Dispensary team

Disclosure and Barring Service Check



This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
