Job Description

Lavant Road Surgery are looking to employ a dispenser to work in our new dispensary within the surgery.

Key role requirements



1. To dispense all repeat and acute prescriptions on the computer queue within 72 hours of request, with acute scripts arising during surgery attendance taking priority, followed by delivery scripts.

2. To monitor stock control and re-order from suppliers as required.

3. To put delivered stock on shelves for storage and to pass delivery notes/invoices to bookkeeper. All invoices to be checked against delivered items, any returns to be noted on credit sheet and all personally administered items to be highlighted for VAT purposes.

4. To deal with dispensing of controlled drugs (to be kept in locked cabinet) including marking details down in appropriate book.

5. To hand out dispensed repeat prescriptions and collect monies for NHS scripts. Ensure that all scripts for dispensed drugs are signed by the patient or their representative on the reverse. Be aware of prescription exemptions and ask to see proof of exemption certificates, pre-payment certificates, Family Credit, etc.

6. To place all waste drugs in yellow waste bin for regular collection.

7. To pass all dispensed scripts to doctors for signature.

8. To answer patient and staff queries re drugs as appropriate.

9. At the end of the working day, to lock up the dispensary.

10. To keep the dispensary in a clean and orderly manner at all times in conjunction with the other dispensers. In particular, to clean the shelves in rotation on a weekly basis and date check the drugs, with the aim of cleaning all shelves monthly.

11. To participate in menial tasks, such as preparing aspirin bottles.

12. To carry out any other duties that may reasonably be requested by the Practice Manager or partners.

13. To check and log temperature of fridge daily & expiry dates of fridge lines monthly.

14. Supporting in the smooth running and operating of the dispensary in the absence of the senior dispenser.

The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others' health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, the practice Health & Safety Manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include:

1. Employees must comply with the provisions of 'The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974' and must take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected by their acts of omissions whilst at work. Employees are also required to cooperate with their employer to enable them to perform or comply with any statutory provisions. The Practices efforts to promote a safe and healthy working environment can only succeed with the full cooperation of its employees.

1. In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.

2. In the performance of the duties outlined in this , the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

3. Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

The post-holder will:

3. Participate in audit where appropriate.

The above list of duties should not be regarded as definitive as they may be reviewed from time to time to take account of changing circumstances. Also, tasks and duties may be extended or redistributed amongst the practice team as necessary and cooperation should not be unreasonably withheld.
