PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
You will drive the BBC's TV & Radio services for UK audiences. As a Distribution Manager overseeing Broadcast, you will be focused on ensuring that those audiences experience these platforms with a near seamless reliability, 365 days a year. You don't need to be an engineer but you will need the capability and interest to develop a deep technical understanding of the infrastructure and business context underpinning our broadcast services.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The Transmission Team sits at the heart of UK media infrastructure. We manage complex, critical services on the BBC's broadcast platforms and our work encompasses all areas in support of that, ranging from operational issues to legal and regulatory policy. On occasion you'll work with colleagues across the business building an understanding of how the BBC is adapting to changing audience behaviours while upholding our obligations. You won't be bored - it's fascinating work, with a collaborative, purpose-driven culture.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Manage third parties and the BBC's key partners to ensure current and future distribution needs are met. Support contract negotiations, identifying areas of opportunity and risk for the BBC, seeking and acting on legal advice as required
  • Monitor supplier performance against BBC requirements, industry standards and best practice, proposing corrective action and providing appropriate communications to audiences and stakeholders
  • Maintain a range of specialist knowledge and skills (both technical and commercial) appropriate to the requirements of the individual role, which will include:
  • Free-to-air broadcast systems (TV, Radio and metadata) and hybrid broadcast-IP systems
  • Broadcast spectrum planning
  • Grow and maintain a thorough understanding of the requirements and implications of working in a highly regulated business environment
  • Identify opportunities, evaluate options and make recommendations for changes in business practices e.g. to deliver future efficiencies and cost savings.
  • May be required to travel within the UK and internationally
  • This role enables decision making in respect of distribution of BBC services with implications for relationships with some of the BBC's biggest partners and competitors, with financial implications running into millions of pounds
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
  • Thorough understanding of the content delivery landscape (broadcasting and IP) and the BBC's position in it, and the strategic importance of the distribution business
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across organisational boundaries, managing diverse stakeholder interests
  • Able to work on own initiative, under pressure and to tight deadlines, with a creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to deal with multiple issues as they arise, remaining calm and effective
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
  • Good understanding and experience of legal terminology and contract principles, negotiation and practices
  • The Distribution Manager will be expected to perform the role within the framework of the BBC's leadership values and behaviours and inspire such behaviour in others
If you can bring some of these skills and experiences, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.
