The Role

We are seeking an experienced and proactive

Drainage Engineer

to carry out both reactive and planned drainage works. This is a hands-on, varied role involving jetting, CCTV investigations, repairs and customer interaction. You will represent Five Environmental on-site, ensuring jobs are completed safely, professionally and in line with industry best practice.

Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Duties

Attend emergency and planned works as directed by Operations. Complete all job notes, reporting, recommendations and photos using BigChange. Carry out CCTV surveys, high-pressure water jetting, electro-mechanical coring, patch repairs, drain lining, small excavations and basic plumbing tasks. Operate and maintain jetting units, tools, plant, PPE and company vehicles. Complete pre-site assessments including access checks, equipment needs and risk identification. Diagnose issues such as structural defects, root ingress, scale, FOG, surcharge and blockages. Undertake waste-to-tank operations and support tanker desilting where required. Ensure safe use of manhole lifting equipment, fall protection and confined entry protocols. Deliver planned maintenance (PPM) including stack cleaning, urinal descale, gully cleansing and interceptor upkeep.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Operate in full compliance with H&S legislation and company rules. Complete daily vehicle checks and report any defects immediately. Wear correct PPE at all times and report hazards. Follow WAH, Manual Handling, COSHH, and Permit-to-Work procedures. Use correct traffic management systems for roadside works in line with Chapter 8. Complete RAMS and dynamic risk assessments for each job. Adhere to environmental standards, ensuring correct disposal of wastewater, FOG and debris.

Customer Service

Communicate professionally with customers and colleagues. Provide clear job updates, recommendations and explanations. Explain findings in a clear, non-technical manner. Deliver high-quality service aligned with Five Environmental's values.

Additional Duties

Support development and training of junior operatives. Assist with major works, including tanker operations. Take part in the on-call rota. Complete end-of-day reporting to ensure compliance, accuracy and job closure. Escalate complex works to Senior Engineers or Operations promptly. Maintain van stock including nozzles, hose, PPE, fittings, patch kits and consumables.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

Experience in drainage engineering or similar field. Confident with jetting, CCTV equipment and digital reporting. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently. Ability to interpret drainage drawings, utility plans and site layouts. Good communication and customer service skills.

Preferred:

Familiarity with industry tools: jetting nozzles, root cutters, chain flails, milling tools, CCTV reporting software. Experience working on domestic, commercial or industrial sites.
