Role Purpose

To support ESS Education and Support Services by providing safe, reliable, and friendly transport for children, young people, and/or adults accessing our programmes. Volunteer drivers play an essential role in helping learners attend sessions, participate fully, and feel supported on their journey.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the day to day bookings and operation of the minibus. Safely operate the ESS minibus in line with organisational policies, road laws, and Highway Code requirements. Collect and transport learners to and from designated locations, ensuring punctuality and a positive experience. Carry out basic pre-drive vehicle checks (fuel, tyres, lights, cleanliness, etc.) and report any concerns promptly. Assist passengers in boarding and exiting the vehicle, offering support where appropriate. Maintain professional boundaries and ensure the safeguarding and wellbeing of all passengers. Keep accurate records of mileage, routes, timings, and any incidents. Represent ESS with professionalism, courtesy, and respect at all times.

Skills and Qualities Needed

A clean, valid driving licence (D1 entitlement preferred or willingness to complete Minibus Driver Awareness training). Confident, safe, and responsible driving style. Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner. Reliability, punctuality, and a commitment to supporting the mission of ESS. Ability to work calmly and respectfully with children, young people, and adults who may have additional needs. Willingness to work as part of a team and follow ESS safeguarding and health & safety procedures.

Time Commitment

Flexible and based on availability.

Driving is typically required during morning and afternoon pick-up/drop-off times, such as Monday to Friday, 8am-10am and 2pm-4pm with occasional additional journeys as needed.

Regular commitment to the same weekly journey for a full term which is often a 6-week period is needed where possible in order to ensure stability for those using this service.
