National Highways has an excellent opportunity for a

Structures Engineer

to join our

Structures team within Operations

, managing over 3000 structures across the North East of England.


As a Structures Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting the management of our structural assets. This includes identifying maintenance and improvement needs, developing schemes to address those needs, and contributing to the long-term resilience of our infrastructure.


You'll also be involved in project management activities such as budget oversight and supply chain coordination, helping us deliver effective asset maintenance and renewal programmes.


Depending on the needs of the team, you may contribute to developing scheme options and preliminary designs, or undertake structural reviews and assessments.



You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full driving licence, with no more than 3 points, to be considered for this position.



Key Responsibilities



Develop early-stage solutions for improvements and renewals, including compiling supporting documents, evidence, and option reports for value management. Identify and prepare survey briefs, and support the delivery of structural surveys to inform improvements, assessments, and renewals. Monitor the delivery of agreed assessment work in collaboration with technical partners, or oversee option delivery of maintenance and improvement works with relevant teams to ensure successful outcomes. Undertake structural reviews and assessments Support the development of the region's asset-led forward programme, including initial scheme development, customer-focused designs, and technical specifications.

About You



Degree or HND in a relevant discipline with appropriate experience, or equivalent. Ideally working towards professional membership of a recognised engineering body. Experience in structural studies, renewal design, or structural assessment. Experience working within allocated budgets, including budget creation for scheme development (desirable). Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with a customer-focused approach. Experience in infrastructure design and assessment to relevant standards. Understanding of CDM 2015 regulations.
