Job title: Early Years Educator.

Purpose of the job: To work as a keyworker and as part of the pre-school team under the direction of the manager. To provide quality safe, sensitive and respectful education and care for young children which meets the individual needs of children attending the setting.

Safeguarding requirement: All Cannings Pre School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is a requirement of all staff that they share this commitment and follow the prescribed policy and procedures to continuously promote a culture of safeguarding across the whole organisation. This includes knowing how to act to protect children and colleagues.

Main duties

1. To assist with the planning and implementation of the curriculum using the current statutory and non-statutory frameworks e.g. the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for guidance.

2. To help to set up for the daily programme and to help tidy away at the end of the session.

3. To act as a keyworker to a small group of children, liaising closely and building an effective relationship with parents/carers and ensuring each child's needs are recognised and met (including SEND, EAL, those with communication difficulties, and the most able).

4. To work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members.

5. To advise the Preschool Manager of any concerns, e.g. health and well-being of children, parents or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary.

6. To take action to support the setting to achieve and maintain a minimum Good Ofsted rating at the next inspection.

7. To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulating play experiences while balancing risks and activity benefits.

8. To ensure that children are kept safe and that you understand the role of colleagues and multi-agency working to support the child, including when to follow child protection procedures.

9. To support meal and snack times within the setting.

10. To actively participate at team meetings, supervision meetings and appraisal meetings.

11. To attend training courses as required and to take responsibility for personal development.

12. To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff, which is acquired as part of the job.

13. To understand, adhere to and contribute to the updating of all the setting's policies and procedures. These include, in particular, those relating to confidentiality, equality and diversity, health and safety, fire precautions, attendance and absence and dropping off and collection of children, food safety, cleanliness of the setting, safeguarding, setting hygiene and whistleblowing. This is not an exhaustive list of the setting's procedures.

14. To ensure that adequate records are kept and updated regularly.

15. To promote the setting to current parents and potential customers.

16. To comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation.

This job description is not an exhaustive list of duties, and the post holder will be required to undertake any other reasonable duties discussed and directed by the Pre School Manager. The post holder is also expected to be flexible and adaptable in their approach to fulfilling their duties.

Person specification



Essential criteria



1. Already qualified at Level 2 in early years education/childcare or studying towards Level 3 Early Years Educator and operating at Level 2.

2. Good general level of education to age 16 and a willingness to undertake mandatory training.

3. Previous experience of working with young children in a formal early years setting.

4. Demonstrates a playful and creative approach to working with young children.

5. Sound knowledge of child development from birth to five years.

6. Knowledge of the current Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and other relevant statutory/regulatory requirements.

7. Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

8. Good communication and empathy skills with adults and children, child-centred and appreciating the uniqueness of each child.

9. An understanding of play-based approaches to children's learning and development.

10. A commitment to continuously promote a culture of safeguarding, vigilant and acting with professional curiosity.

11. A commitment to equal opportunities and diversity.

12. A commitment to working effectively with young children and families, including able to have difficult conversations.

13. A friendly and flexible approach at work that facilitates the development of effective relationships.

Desirable criteria



1. Already qualified at Level 3 early years education and childcare qualification or equivalent.

2. Passes in GCSE English and maths (or equivalent).

3. Committed to continuing professional development.

4. Current Paediatric First Aid at Work qualification.
