The Council is seeking a qualified and experienced

Ecologist or Principal Ecologist

to support the Development Management team. The successful candidate will provide expert ecological advice on planning applications and development proposals, ensuring compliance with biodiversity and environmental legislation and contributing to the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).

Key Responsibilities:



Review planning applications and pre-application enquiries for ecological considerations. Provide specialist ecology advice to the Development Management team and other internal departments. Evaluate development proposals in the context of Biodiversity Net Gain and other statutory obligations. Contribute to strategic planning, policy formulation, and environmental management across the Council. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to deliver ecological outcomes aligned with council and national priorities. Prepare technical reports, guidance notes, and briefing papers as required. While the role is expected to be desk-based, occasional site visits may be required (subject to approval; mileage allowance applicable).

Essential Requirements:



A degree (or equivalent) in a biological, ecological, or environmental science discipline. Full membership (or eligibility for membership) of the

Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)

or equivalent professional body. Sound knowledge of UK and EU wildlife legislation and policy frameworks. Experience of providing ecology advice within a planning or development context. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Job Type: Temporary
Contract length: 4 months

Pay: 12.21-18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37 per week
