About the role:



As an Ecology Technician within Powys County Council's Highways, Transport & Recycling service, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery and management of ecological assessments and mitigation works across a wide range of council service areas. Working under the guidance of the Planning & Highways Ecologist, you will help ensure that biodiversity and ecological considerations are embedded into planning, design, and construction processes. This role is central to helping the Council meet its legal obligations and environmental commitments, while also promoting ecological enhancement opportunities throughout Powys.

About you:



You are a passionate and knowledgeable with field survey experience, including protected species and habitat assessments. You bring an understanding of ecological legislation, biodiversity policy, and mitigation strategies. You are confident working independently and collaboratively, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You are comfortable working outdoors in varied and sometimes challenging conditions, and you are committed to continuous professional development. Ideally, you hold a degree in ecology or a related subject, are a member of a relevant professional body, and either hold or are eligible to apply for protected species survey licences.

What you will do:



Conduct ecological assessments and surveys, and provide specialist advice on biodiversity matters to council service areas and clients. Act as Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW), supervising site activities to ensure compliance with legislation, licences, and best practice. Assist with technical responses to planning applications, environmental statements, and land use change proposals. Support the development of local planning policies and biodiversity strategies, including SEA and Development Plans. Help secure protected species licences and statutory consents for council projects. Provide training and guidance to staff on ecological compliance and biodiversity targets. Liaise with external bodies such as conservation organisations and wildlife trusts. Participate in public engagement activities and respond to enquiries and complaints. Deputise for the Planning & Highways Ecologist when required.

Pay: 29,093.00-31,067.00 per year
