Palgrave Macmillan is looking for a motivated Editor to join the Film, Culture and Media team on a 1 year FTC in a maternity cover capacity.

The Editor will be responsible for acquiring and publishing a programme of research monographs, Handbooks, Palgrave Pivots and upper-level textbooks, to ensure the strategic growth of the Film and TV Studies list and enhance Palgrave\'s reputation as a market leader in the humanities.

The ideal candidate will be target-minded, energetic, and driven. They will be a creative self-starter who has a deep understanding of academic publishing, with a high level of commercial awareness and exceptional communication and presentation skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Seek out new authors and books: actively research ideas, topics, and people for potential books and book series in line with the list and company strategy.
  • Identify and drive forward new areas for growth; be highly aware of and motivated by changes in the wider publishing landscape, such as digital transformation and the move towards Open Access.
  • Evaluate proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, and market; offer editorial feedback.
  • Negotiate the acquisition/contract process with authors, signing an agreed number of new titles each year.
  • Manage the front-list and series associated with the assigned subject area, and maintain profitable relationships with book series editors, authors, and advisors
  • Manage the back-list, making decisions on publishing potential new editions of successful titles
  • Remain a point of contact for authors throughout the publication process
  • Attend academic conferences and conduct campus visits to meet new authors as well as to promote and build the Palgrave brand within the research community
  • Liaise with global editorial colleagues as well as production, sales, marketing, and publicity.
Skills, Qualification and Experience:

Essential
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study
  • Substantial publishing experience in an editorial acquisition capacity and/or in an academic publishing environment
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
  • Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on own initiative
  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems, queries, and opportunities
  • Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels
  • Strong presentation skills
Desirable
  • Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stake-holders
  • Be flexible, able to work in a multi-cultural environment, and show a commercial/entrepreneurial spirit
This role will be a hybrid position based in our London offices offering core hours.
