The Job Profile
Simon & Schuster UK's Adult Editorial is looking for Editorial Operations Director to join their team.
Reporting to the Executive Publisher Non-Fiction & Gallery, with dotted lines to the Executive Publisher for Fiction and the Publishers for literary, the Editorial Operations Director will be responsible for the smooth running of our systems and critical path, and all editorial tasks and author care.
Editorial Operations Director will create a new central team within Adult Editorial. They will head up a department of Project Editors and Managing Editorial to work alongside the three divisions of Fiction, Non-Fiction and Gallery, and Literary (Scribner and Summit).
The Job Role
The ideal candidate will be collaborate with Executive Publishers to create a unified editorial workflow across three divisions, directly manage a Senior Project Editor in each division and oversee their teams, while leading the management of the critical path, editorial operations, systems, backlist processes and manage editorial plant costs.
The Candidate Profile
The Editorial Operations Director will have a deep understanding of the publishing lifecycle and how to support authors at every stage, recognising the critical role operations play in a book's success. They will combine strategic thinking with strong attention to detail, leading a large team across diverse titles while balancing individual project needs. They will be passionate about delivering an exceptional author experience, they understand how the editorial process influences quality and market performance, and how systems and processes can drive efficiency.
With proven experience in fiction and non-fiction, team leadership, and process optimisation within trade publishing, they will bring strong editorial skills including copywriting, proofreading, and desk editing and a thorough knowledge of the publishing journey from acquisition to backlist.
