The New Arab is a fast-growing English-language website focused on authentic coverage of news, current affairs, and culture and lifestyle stories from the Middle East and North Africa region and beyond. Targeting audiences interested in the region in English language speaking countries and communities, led by the UK, North America, South and East Asia, and Australia/New Zealand.

The New Arab's diverse newsroom offers a platform for the voice of the Middle East and aims to provoke an exchange of ideas and open discussion in a responsible manner via news, in-depth analysis and comment. We have a large pool of journalists from all backgrounds, allowing us to provide fruitful and insightful reporting on cultural and social issues, as well as political and humanitarian issues.

The New Arab is the English sister publication of Arabic daily newspaper and online news outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and is part of the Fadaat Media network, which allows us to leverage sprawling networks of correspondents in the region and their high-quality output, as well as its own resources.

Job Summary



The Editorial/Research Assistant will support the managing editor and desk editors in ensuring The New Arab continues to meet its high standard of output. As a researcher, you will be expected to help bring in data and depth to support our journalistm and internal knowledge bases. The role will play a pivotal role in providing editorial, administrative and project management support for the newsroom. They will carry out a range of tasks including but not limited to; research, editing, proof reading, templating copy on content management systems, assisting in managing social media output, scheduling and ad hoc administrative tasks related to newsroom coordination.

Responsibilities:



Assisting the newsroom and editorial team. Researching background information & data for news, current affairs and culture and lifestyle stories and multimedia production. Proofing and editing online text, including social media. Helping manage The New Arab's social media accounts. Assisting the editor and other senior stakeholders with administration tasks. Collating timesheets and invoices for payment of freelancers and contributors. Applying for accreditation for staff for major events. Some rota responsibilities. Diary management and scheduling for senior members of staff. Maintaining internal knowledge databases and project management interfaces (Trello, Asana, etc.)

Requirements:



Knowledge of project and data management tools. Demonstrable research, organisational and planning skills. Native-level English language skills. You are expected to be able to write clearly and accurately with complete comprehension skills. Social media awareness and ability to promote published work and engage with audience in appropriate conversational tone. An understanding of English language audiences interested in the MENA region. Must have a full right to work in the UK for the duration of the role. Degree in relevant field.

Desirable:



Experience in audience engagement and social media. Experience with Content Management Systems. Experience in video and graphic production for a recognised media house. A background in journalism and experience of working within a busy newsroom.
