Anti-racist statement for Norfolk Youth Justice Service

The Justice Select Committee noted that "race disproportionality is significant and fundamental, visible in every part of the youth justice system".

We are committed to becoming an anti-racist service. We acknowledge that racism exists within the systems we deliver and operate within, impacting on the disproportionate representation of children from ethnic minority groups within the youth justice system. We accept responsibility for taking action wherever and whenever racism occurs.

We will:

Educate ourselves and encourage conversation.*
Challenge ourselves and learn from our mistakes.*
The voices of children and parents from ethnic minority communities will be listened to, acted upon and incorporated into our strategies and our actions.*
We will strengthen our structures and systems, our policies and our procedures so that they remove barriers for children from ethnic minority backgrounds.*
We shall be equitable in how we treat children and in the decisions we make about them.*

Our aim is to prevent children and young people from offending whilst safeguarding their welfare, protecting the public and helping restore the damage caused to the victims of their crimes.

Our key outcomes, prioritised nationally by the Ministry of Justice are to:

Reduce the number of children and young people coming into the youth justice system (first time entrants) Reduce re-offending by children and young people Reduce the numbers of young people going into custody (prison) either sentenced or on remand.

The postholder will be expected to work flexibly, with a clear expectation of evening, weekend and bank holiday working. This includes work on a rota basis to cover weekend and bank holiday statutory contact's cover. In addition, the postholder will be required to travel to other work locations in and out of the county, which are not always on public transport routes, including home visits and visits to secure establishments.

The postholder will be required to work with children who have demonstrated violent or sexually harmful behaviours towards other children and/or adults, and who present a high risk of harm to others.

This is a great opportunity to join our supportive team and make a real difference to children to enable positive outcomes.
