About Agricarbon UK

Helping farming make a material contribution to mitigating climate change, this decade

Agricarbon is an ambitious start-up in the fast-emerging soil carbon space. Demand for carbon removals is forecast to grow exponentially in the next few decades, and it has been estimated that agricultural soils have the capacity to capture up to 1 trillion tonnes of CO2 through regenerative farming practices.

Agricarbon develops innovative technology-based services that measure soil carbon with the highest level of accuracy and at ultra-low cost. This is a vital missing link to allow soil carbon capture projects to demonstrate and secure payments for CO2 removal, unlocking farm soils as a vast carbon sink opportunity. Our aim is to make a meaningful contribution to mitigating climate change within the next 10 years.

Based in Dundee, Scotland, Agricarbon is targeting established international carbon removal markets whilst simultaneously helping to develop the soil carbon market in the UK and Europe. Through science-led innovation in automation and systems engineering, Agricarbon aims to set a global gold standard for reliable, affordable soil carbon certification and unleash a new wave of climate mitigating regenerative farming practices.

We have recently completed Series A fundraising to scale our operations rapidly and have multiple contracts to fulfil for large food and beverage companies/project developers in the UK, Europe and internationally.

Role context and summary

The Electrical & Controls Engineer will be responsible for supporting the technical evolution of our ASCA (Automated Soil Carbon Analysis) labs as well as supporting the maintenance technicians with troubleshooting on the line.

The main components to our systems:

ASCA production lines - currently 1 operational in Dundee, 1 operational in the USA and 1 being built in Dundee. These lines are primarily controlled by Allen Bradley PLCs (Rockwell) however there are some small elements of Siemens present as well. SQL Database - We use SQL databases to gather and manage the data produced on our ASCA production lines. We use proprietary Applications written in either Python or C# to facilitate the transfer of data safely from our PLC control systems to the SQL Data bases. Dewatering equipment - we have process waste that we are currently working to develop a dewatering process for. This will be controlled by Siemens PLC. There will be 1 in Dundee and eventually 1 in the USA as well.
This role will involve leading smaller projects as well as participating in larger projects. It may include covering maintenance engineers when they are on holiday as the whole team will pitch in to help out. For the most part, we design and build most of our equipment ourselves. The engineering team comprises of experienced Mechanical, electrical, controls and process engineers all working together to achieve the significant success we have enjoyed so far.

With Agricarbon, you would have the opportunity to do electrical and PLC design for smaller systems as well as making both electrical and PLC modifications to our larger systems. This role may suit a time served Electrical engineer (Or Multiskilled) with varying levels of experience with PLCs. The role reports directly to the Head of Engineering however, we currently have a Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer who would be responsible for mentoring and developing the successful candidate.

We are seeking an individual who thrives on a high level of autonomy and responsibility in their role. This environment demands someone with a strong positive attitude towards their career and opportunities for growth. We are keen to share knowledge and develop younger engineers to expand their knowledge of control systems.
