Lead the planning, design, delivery, and maintenance of all electrical systems within a custodial estate--covering secure areas, perimeter fencing, CCTV/security power, lighting, and essential services. Ensuring safety and compliance in a secure environment will be central to this role.
Key Responsibilities
Manage comprehensive electrical project life cycle: design coordination, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance.
Develop and control electrical budgets, schedules, and resources aligned with custodial facility requirements.
Coordinate electricians, subcontractors, and integrate electrical works with M&E and security systems.
Ensure all installations comply with BS?7671, prison-specific regulations, security protocols, and H&S standards.
Conduct site inspections, risk assessments, testing/commissioning, snagging, and remedial actions.
Maintain technical records: drawings, site reports, certification, and O&M manuals.
Liaise with prison estate managers, security teams, design consultants, and contractors.
Authorise purchase orders, manage suppliers, and bench-mark costs for best value.
Required Experience & Qualifications
5+ years' experience managing electrical projects, ideally in secure, public-sector, estates, or critical infrastructure environments.
NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds / HNC/HND or degree in Electrical Engineering or Project Management.
ECS card and SMSTS or SSSTS certification.
In-depth knowledge of BS?7671 and UK electrical regulations.
Proven budget management, scheduling, leadership, stakeholder management.
Strong communication skills: coordinating across security, facilities, estates, and maintenance teams.
Valid UK driving licence.
Desirable
Experience within custodial/security installations or critical national infrastructure.
Familiarity with secure power supplies, backup systems, and emergency lighting protocols.
Experience of public-sector procurement and tender processes, with financial authorisation authority.
