to support our domestic retrofit teams delivering energy-efficiency works, primarily under
ECO4
and
BUS
schemes. This is a practical, hands-on role assisting qualified electricians with installation and enabling works in both occupied and unoccupied homes. It is ideal for someone developing in the trade who can work safely, maintain a tidy standard in customers' properties, and show initiative.
This is not a fully qualified electrician position; however, we do expect the right person to be capable of working independently on appropriate tasks, while knowing when to escalate issues.
Key Responsibilities
Support electricians on domestic retrofit works, helping jobs run smoothly and to programme.
Carry out assigned tasks to a good standard, including:
Cable routing and support
Basic containment and accessory preparation (as directed)
Fitting back boxes, accessories, and second-fix support (where competent)
Labelling, tidying runs, and assisting with making-good preparation
Loft work and access set-up where required
Assist with safe isolation procedures and basic testing support where appropriate (under supervision).
Prepare tools, materials, and work areas; maintain a clean, safe environment throughout the job.
Work respectfully in customers' homes, including protecting floors/surfaces, minimising disruption, and leaving the property tidy.
Coordinate effectively with other trades on site (e.g., heating engineers, insulation teams, plasterers) to avoid delays.
Maintain basic job records and flag material requirements early to prevent downtime.
Expectations: Working Independently and Taking Initiative
We are looking for someone who can operate with a level of independence appropriate to an improver role, including:
Working alone when required
on straightforward tasks (e.g., preparation work, cable runs, back-boxing, tidy-up, materials management), while the electrician completes other elements of the job.
Taking initiative
to keep work moving: preparing the next area, setting up access, organising materials, and anticipating what the electrician will need next.
Problem-spotting
: identifying issues early (access constraints, damaged existing wiring, unexpected building fabric, missing materials) and reporting them promptly.
Professional judgement
: knowing your limits and asking for guidance before proceeding with anything that could impact compliance, safety, or finish quality.
Customer awareness
: communicating politely and professionally in occupied properties, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and care.
Ideal Candidate (Preferred, Not Essential)
While not essential, the ideal candidate will:
Have
their own basic hand tools
suitable for mate/improver duties.
Have
their own transport
to travel between jobs and support day-to-day site flexibility (this role involves moving between domestic properties).
Be
flexible and responsive
to changing site requirements, including occasional short-notice adjustments to locations or task priorities.
Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
Experience as an
Electrical Mate / Improver
in domestic settings preferred (retrofit experience is a strong advantage).
Practical understanding of domestic electrical installation work and safe working practices.
Confident using hand tools and basic power tools safely and effectively.
Good timekeeping, reliability, and the ability to plan your workload within the day.
ECS/CSCS and electrical training (e.g., Level 2/3) beneficial but not essential depending on experience.
A UK driving licence is desirable for travel between jobs.
Role Fit
This role suits someone who wants to progress in the electrical trade by gaining consistent domestic retrofit experience, supporting qualified electricians, and demonstrating initiative and responsibility--without carrying the full scope and accountability of a qualified electrician position.
