Job Summary



The position of an Emergency Lighting Engineer involves a range of responsibilities, primarily focused on the installation, maintenance, and repair of emergency lighting systems within council buildings. These systems are critical for ensuring safety and compliance with regulatory standards in the event of an emergency. Standard working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. Flexibility is required, particularly for early start times (6/7 am) in certain buildings like schools.

Responsibilities



Install emergency lighting systems in line with design specifications and relevant electrical standards. Conduct wiring, mounting, and fitting of lighting units, control systems, and power supplies. Perform routine testing and maintenance of emergency lighting systems. Ensure systems are fully operational and meet legal requirements, conducting monthly and annual inspections. Diagnose and repair faults in emergency lighting systems, including battery replacements, re-wiring, or replacing faulty units. Ensure all work complies with current regulations, including British Standards (BS 5266-1) and health and safety guidelines. Maintain detailed records of inspections, test results, and any repairs or installations carried out. Provide certifications and reports on the condition of the systems, highlighting any areas for improvement. Adhere to all relevant health and safety practices, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following risk assessments. Ensure safe working practices are maintained while working in different environments, such as construction sites or occupied buildings. Keep up to date with advancements in emergency lighting technology and changes in legislation. Attend training courses to enhance knowledge and skills in emergency lighting systems.

Qualifications



NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or a related field. BS 5266 certification for emergency lighting systems (or willingness to obtain). A valid ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) card. Full UK driving licence.
