Job Description

The purpose of the emergency medical technician role is to assist in the delivery of high-quality and effective pre-hospital clinical care (support to frontline Ambulance Trusts is not undertaken in this role), inter-hospital transfers and urgent hospital admissions.

Working as a crew, you'll attend emergencies, providing appropriate care and effective treatment for patients but also giving care, reassurance and support to the patient and relatives. You will need to be able to select and apply your skills, training and equipment safely to achieve the best possible outcome for your patient.

Essential Minimum Requirements



AAP Level 4, or legacy IHCD Technician Qualification

Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (CERAD) and approved alternative.

Current DBS/DBS update service.

Hourly pay rate will be dependant on allocated shifts, as you may be requested to partake on a PTS shift, as a driver for a paramedic or as lead clinician when acting as EMT.

Key Responsibilities



Patient Assessment & Treatment:

Evaluate patients' conditions and provide necessary treatment, stabilization, and compassionate care in pre-hospital settings where required.

Patient Transport:

Safely transport patients to hospitals or other care facilities using ambulances.

Crew Work:

Work as part of a team, (with a Paramedic or Emergency Care Assistant and follow their clinical direction when required.

Communication:

Effectively communicate with patients, relatives, and other healthcare professionals, providing support and reassurance.

Problem Solving:

Use problem-solving skills to manage patient care, sometimes by arranging alternative community care or treating patients at home.

Safety & Accountability:

Maintain patient and crew safety, promoting infection prevention and being professionally accountable for their actions and decisions.

Work Environment & Schedule



Shift Work:

EMTs typically work shifts that cover any period of the day and evening (we aim to have crew on duty for up to 12 hours a day, and operate seven days a week, including evenings, early mornings, weekends, and bank holidays).

Varied Settings:

The work involves both pre-hospital environments and inter-hospital transfers.

Outdoor Work:

EMTs must be prepared to work outdoors in all conditions when necessary.

Remuneration



You will be paid an hourly rate of 15.00-22.00 payable monthly in arrears by BACS.

In addition to hourly pay for shifts worked, bank staff who make themselves available and complete an assigned shift will receive a fixed retainer of 25 per shift. This retainer is not dependant on the number of hours worked within the shift and will be applied per completed shift.

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES



Respond to emergency, urgent, special and planned patient transfer requests.

Operate as a driver or clinician (depending on crew composition and job specific patient monitoring criteria)

Respond under emergency (or non-emergency) conditions ensuring the safety of others and driving with due regard to patient comfort, Road Traffic Regulations, your competence and with courtesy to other road users. NB: you may be required to drive under emergency conditions requiring intense concentration, often for prolonged periods.

Maintain regular communication with the Ambulance Dispatch team using telephony/mobile data terminals as necessary to receive and provide call information updates and register your vehicle's current status and availability.

Mobilise promptly and effectively using satellite navigation systems, data terminals and maps, as appropriate.

Risk assess the job/booking/scene for safety and any additional resource requirements, communicating additional needs/information to your dispatcher (or those you are contracted to).

Conduct a systematic examination of the patient using assessment skills and a knowledge of the effects of acute/chronic illness and trauma to develop a working diagnosis.

Implement appropriate clinical care and treatment in accordance with the patient's needs, the JRCALC framework for clinical practice, the Company' Clinical Guidelines/procedures and your own level of training and competence.

Adopt Infection Control procedures and Universal Precautions.

Select and apply clinical interventions in accordance with Associate Ambulance Practitioner Level 4 competencies plus other locally agreed diagnostic and treatment procedures to include (but not exhaustively), the use of 3 and 12 lead ECG for recognition of cardiac arrest dysrhythmias, Manual and/or Automated Defibrillation, and Airway adjuncts such as nasopharyngeal airways and the Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA), Electronic Blood Glucose measurement/monitoring, and Procedures for the Recognition of Death, calling for assistance from the frontline Ambulance Service.

To assist another Healthcare professional to deliver clinical care beyond your scope of practice.

Communicate with and manage patients, relatives and the public in a calm, sensitive and professional manner ensuring patient dignity and informed consent for all patient assessment and treatment.

Communicate effectively with a wide range of professionals and other agencies to support joint working to meet patient needs, which may, at times, be complex and sensitive.

To transfer the patient to and from the ambulance, undertaking a full and dynamic risk assessment, using the most appropriate equipment and moving/handling techniques for the patient's needs, condition and the circumstances.

As appropriate, transport patient(s) and others to and from hospitals and other treatment centres in a safe and comfortable manner, reassessing the patient's condition and responding appropriately to their needs enroute.

To accurately complete the Patient Clinical Record (electronic paper) and other operational administration, as required.

Maintain confidentiality of patient information and restrict access by third parties to a strictly need to know basis.

Contribute to the Company' Audit and Effectiveness Programme, as required.

Check any vehicle prior to use and ensure that it is roadworthy, fully equipped and that all equipment/consumables are serviceable and ready for use.

Report any loss, defects or damage accordingly

Handle and dispose of all clinical waste and maintain appropriate standards of cleanliness of vehicles, equipment and premises.

Ensure the security of company premises, vehicles and equipment and patient's property, as required, and report all damage or loss immediately.

Identify actual or potential hazards or risks to yourself, patients, colleagues or others within the work environment and take immediate and appropriate action to reduce or eliminate the risk.

Report any risk/untoward occurrence.

Maintain your clinical and operational competence and undertake all mandatory training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD), commensurate with your role, as determined by the company, including the access of information in a variety of formats.

To provide advice and guidance to other staff, appropriate to your role.

To provide witness statements to the Trust, Police or other authorised parties and attend HM Courts and Coroners Courts, as required.

To undertake a role that involves difficult and complex tasks/procedures and working in situations that may be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding, including potential support for the bereaved.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES



Flexibility:

The postholder may be required to work at other sites in line with service needs.

Infection Prevention and Control:

All employees have duties under the "Health and safety at Work etc. Act 1974" which have a bearing on the prevention and control of infection in particular: Staff are expected to understand their responsibilities as outlined in the infection prevention and control policy and related guidelines, comply with all stated systems and maintain their knowledge of infection prevention and control relative to their role.

This will include identifying and reporting all risks to health and safety, security of equipment and property, use of necessary safety devices and protective clothing and the achievement of the Trust's objectives in accordance with the Trust's risk management strategy and policies.

Pay: 15.00-22.00 per hour
