Control, coordination, and keeping everything on track - that's what this role at Northern is all about.
As a West End Console (Signaller) based at our Neville Hill TrainCare Centre, you'll play a crucial part in making sure our depots run like clockwork. You'll be responsible for authorising and regulating train movements, keeping our operations flowing safely, smoothly, and on time.
This isn't just a desk-based role. It's your chance to be at the heart of a live railway environment - making real-time decisions, working closely with depot teams, and keeping the focus firmly on safety and service.
You won't need to be a signalling expert when you arrive - we'll give you all the training you need. What matters most is that you stay calm under pressure, have a sharp eye for detail, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where your decisions really count.
What you'll be doing:
No two shifts will be the same, but here's a look at what you'll get stuck into:
Managing and authorising train movements in and out of the depot via the West End control panel
Coordinating closely with depot teams, mainline train crew, and Network Rail's York ROC
Logging and reporting movements, issues, and delays and communicating them clearly to leadership teams
Operating yard points in the event of equipment failure or emergency
Taking control of local work protection, ensuring colleagues can work safely on site
Helping train crews get to the right places, on time, and ready to go
This is a safety-critical role, which means accuracy, calm thinking, and consistent communication are key. You'll be working shifts, including early starts, nights, weekends, and bank holidays - so flexibility is essential.

Why Northern?
We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
