ENGINEERING DIRECTOR



We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Engineering Director to lead our engineering function, overseeing multiple concurrent product development programmes from concept through to manufacture. You will play a pivotal role in shaping technical strategy, ensuring project excellence, and fostering a culture of innovation, quality and on-time delivery.

This is a high-impact role for a leader with deep technical expertise, strong customer engagement skills, and proven success in managing engineering teams and complex product portfolios in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities



Provide strategic leadership across all engineering functions (electronics, software, mechanical, optics, project management). Own and drive the full lifecycle of product development programmes - from bid through delivery and into production - ensuring quality, timelines, and budgets are met. Act as the technical authority and escalation point for project managers and engineers. Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of engineers and project leads. Drive continuous improvement in design processes, tools, quality systems, and technical governance. Oversee resource planning, hiring, and professional development of the engineering team. Work closely with sales and business development to scope technical proposals and support bids. Maintain high levels of client engagement, ensuring technical excellence and customer satisfaction. Contribute to long-term technology strategy. Reporting of project portfolio status to key stakeholders and senior management.

Required Experience and Skills



10+ years' experience in engineering roles with at least 5 years in senior technical Experience managing design services or consultancy-style engineering organisations. Proven track record in full lifecycle product development in embedded systems or electronics/software. Strong understanding of regulated industry development processes (e.g. Medical Devices, Functional Safety, Hazardous Areas). Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional, multi-site engineering teams. Excellent stakeholder and customer relationship management. Deep familiarity with product development methodologies and management Advanced commercial awareness and project financial acumen, including forecasting and risk management. Exceptional leadership, influencing, and team-building skills. Excellent communication and presentation abilities at both technical and executive levels.

Desirable Skills



Familiarity with proposal development and contract negotiation. Knowledge of emerging technologies relevant to IoT, smart devices, or low-power embedded design. Exposure to international manufacturing and technology transfer.

Qualifications



Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Electronic Engineering or related discipline. Chartered Engineer status or equivalent preferred. Further technical or business qualifications (e.g. MSc, MBA) are an advantage.
