Engineering Manager

Culham, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Job Description

Company Description

By 2050, the planet could be using twice as much electricity compared to today. Are you interested in contributing and helping to shape the future of the world\'s energy? If so, read on.

Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA are at the forefront of realising energy from fusion, working with industry and research partners to deliver the ground-breaking developments that will underpin tomorrow\'s fusion power stations with the aim of bringing fusion electricity to the grid. As we work towards our mission and goals, UKAEA has devised values (Innovative, Committed, Trusted and Collaborative) that capture the spirit of how we work.

Who are we looking for?

UKAEA is expanding its team of Engineering Managers to drive successful delivery of several exciting world leading, novel projects.

You would be a part of the Integrated Engineering Division which has an extensive portfolio and track record leading projects for the organisation. This includes key strategic CCFE UKAEA programmes strengthening its, and the UK\'s, position to provide for the future fusion economy as the technology matures towards commercialisation.

We have vacancies to support the following Programmes:

H3AT: H3AT is pioneering research into tritium breeding, processing, distribution, storage, recycling and disposal. H3AT drives the development of cutting-edge technologies to address tritium challenges for sustainable fusion delivery and technology transfer beyond fusion

MAST-U: This UKAEA owned and managed Tokamak is based on the original MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) machine, which ran from 2000 to 2013. It has been rebuilt to enable higher performance - longer pulses, increased heating power and a stronger magnetic field - and an innovative new plasma exhaust system. MAST Upgrade is exploring the route to compact fusion power plants, testing potential powerplant technology and addressing physics issues for the international ITER fusion project.

Joint European Torus (JET) Decommissioning: UKAEA is a world leader in fusion technology and are about to undertake an ambitious programme to decommission a tritiated tokamak and will develop novel decommissioning technologies that will inform the design of future fusion devices.

Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP): STEP is a UKAEA programme that will demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion. It will also determine how the plant will be maintained through its operational life and prove the potential for the plant to produce its own fuel. This is a fast-paced programme gaining national media coverage that continues to lead engineering, scientific and technology developments for a first of a kind fusion power plant around 2040.

Other Programmes: The UKAEA Integrated Engineering Division also supports a variety of other fusion programmes executed by UKAEA. These include JET24 which focusses on delivering the final upgrades to the JET tokamak prior to its final operational campaigns, projects within Fusion Technology Facility where the UK\'s fusion expertise is developed through enabling a capability to test, research and develop prototype components that may be used within a fusion environment and the HyDUS project; a UKAEA, industry and academic collaboration on a world first hydrogen storage demonstrator that is set to provide important benefits for fusion development and longer-term energy storage and decarbonisation efforts.

Within our roles we promote hybrid and flexible working to ensure that our employees are able to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Requirements for on-site working vary by project and can be discussed further during the application process.

What will you be responsible for?

As an Engineering Manager you will manage the engineering delivery of a work package or project across a broad range of technologies and disciplines, maintaining technical overview across projects so that strong interfaces are made between work packages and the wider organisation. As a guide the likely project cost you will be involved with will be
\xc2\xa31m.

This role is not a line management role, but will involve leading significant technical teams, as well as mentoring and coaching of project engineers across UKAEA. This is an engineering project delivery role, and not a technical specialist role.

You\'ll work alongside a project manager, ensuring that the quality and content of projects is appropriate, whilst respecting budgets and timescales. You will provide technical and strategic direction for projects or work packages and communicate their needs, risks and successes both internally and to external stakeholders.

Your main responsibilities will depend on the assigned project, but may include:

Confirming and delivering assigned project scope and executing Engineering Projects to a high standard.

Producing and maintaining a suite of technical project documentation (Project Technical Implementation Plan / Engineering Management Plan, system design documentation, integration and testing strategies).

Advise the project team on technical solutions, designs and/or critical plant operational and commissioning issues.

Building technical specifications ready to tender to the supply chain.

Managing suppliers and contractors on site and/or in the supply chain in delivery against technical requirements.

As part of your role, you could be asked to work in radiation controlled areas or in beryllium controlled areas. Full training and medical assessments will be provided if this is necessary.

Experience with defining and developing programme technical strategy, such as executing compliance strategies against design standards and/or regulations.

Ability to converse with and steer engineering analysis.

Chartered Status with relevant Engineering Institutions or equivalent experience.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

Experience in a high-tech (fusion) environment.

Experience with fusion relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and transient magnetic fields.

Knowledge of modern manufacturing techniques.

Experience in managing projects in a scientific environment.

Commercial acumen in placing complex technical projects with the supply chain.
